Cole and His Cornish U & ME

Rankin, IL(Zone 5a)

Meet Cole, the black lab, "U" and "ME" both Cornish X.. my family bought them from TSC with good intentions, 3 weeks ago, to train our 3 dogs and 3 cats to like chickens before my chick order came in.. their line of thinking was it would be cheaper and easier to train with 2 $1.50 chicks..
These 2 have actually been a joy and the saddest part is they are the gentlest chickens.. and even if I wanted them to become house-pets there mere growth rate makes them not long for this world.
I have formed a lot of genetic opinions in the last 3 weeks.. and will do further research in my own time, I am sure not in time to save these two, but for now, they must forage for their food.. they must stretch daily.. they work for everything they get.. and they get less protein and more calcium.. they also have to exercises their legs.. nothing like a LONG thin line of feed to get them running..lol

So On to pics.. I may post now and again to let you all know what their progress is. Anyone with ideas.. feel welcome.. I am not by any means an do-gooder.. keep-em alive at any cost type of person.. I understand the food principle here.. I am not sure I am prepared for this right now.. I just started my chicken "career" and was hoping to work up to this.. but I also realize if it come down to pain or merely existing.. I will take care of business.

Not to worry... There is always a human hand right nearby.

Cole likes it when the chiks walk on him.. so when they ignore him he starts acting like a fool... to get their attention.

And last but not least, when he's done rolling in all that chicken feed.. somebody has to clean him off, who better than a friend like "U"

Cute :)
Beautiful dog. I see he is licking his chops in that one pic. Probably thinking they might be quite tasty indeed.

Our dog (lab and coon mix) grew up with our chickens. She was a puppy when they were babies so they got used to one another. The chickens are all so comfortable with her that they will crawl in the doghouse with her if it rains and they are out. She tries to pick fights with the roosters and loves it when they fight back, but we have to remind her that there is "no chicken for Libby". Sometimes we need to tell the roosters "no Libby for rooster".
