I have always loved herbs and had a few growing in my garden, but didn't want to add on until I started using them more. Lately, my plants haven't been able to grow fast enough for the cooking use they are getting!
I would like to add more herbs to the garden and am wondering where is everyone's favorite place to buy them?
Your Favorite Place To Buy Herbs
I buy most of my herbs at an annual Herb Fair on mothers day weekend.Of course that is of no help to you. I do think some farmers markets have a good selections.
I prefer to be able to feel and smell the plant before purchase. So I cannot remember ordering any.
A lot of herbs can be easily started by seed.
What kind of herbs you looking for?
By the way Thanks for the co-op
Are you going to be drying your herbs?
You're welcome!
I do plan to dry some herbs, but someone said mint has more flavor when frozen as opposed to dried.
Herbs are hard to find around here, plant or seed, so I'm planning to order seed for sure, and maybe some plants.
I like to buy from www.fragrantfields.com
Horizon Herbs
Crimson Sage
Richter's
Companion Plants
Possum Creek Herbs
I"ve bought from crimsonsage too, nice place. Betty, how's that variegated ballota doing? did it ever come back for you?
I've purchased from farmers markets, but mostly at local nurseries. I've probably spent thousands of dollars over the last 30 years on herb plants. I ordered from Richter's a couple of times some years ago and was very satisfied. I would order from the internet again if there was something I wanted and couldn't find locally. I've grown a few things like basil, fennel, and chives from seed, and a few others like rosemary and sages from cuttings. I love herbs. I'll go anywhere to see a herb garden. What did I read above about an herb co-op--is there one underway?
Kathy Ann, so far the variegated horehound has not come back up, but it is still early around here. Bloodroot is just blooming. I was teaching crazy quilting in northern NJ this past week and decided to take a side trip on the way home to go to Well Sweep Herbs. Hadn't been in a few years. Yowza! What a great place. Managed to get a double blood root. It is beautiful. Got lots of things I "had" to have.
Oh man, ! I"m so jealous. I have never been close enough to go to any nursery like the ones on the net. I wish I did live close enough to a few of them. I bet that place is to die for LOL
I bet you did load up, I knew I would if I t was me visiting that place, I 've never heard of a double bloodroot. I got the single one, but it's just a single plant, I've never been able to do well with the bloodroot. doesnt seem to like it here.
Well, close enough was a 4 hour drive each way. :-) But, I was already in the kinda area teaching, so what's a side trip? You can get the double blood root from their catalog. I have a lovely patch of single bloodroots in our woodland area. It might be a little too hot in AR for bloodroot to thrive, I'm not sure. Make sure it gets moist, but well-drained soil and plenty of shade.
coul d be the problem with mine then, not enough shade.
I can't tel you how many times iv'e tried to down load that catalog fromwellsweep herbs, something's not right, i've never been able to down load the whole thing. never shows up. tried many times, haven' been able to order from them because that. Can't seem to get a contact email to them either to let them know. They use to have an on line catalog didn't they? they don't any more. and it's one pain in the butt for me to get that catalog.
I've often wanted to post on daves asking if someone else could download it and send it to me some how in an email. i'm not sure how that would be done either, the catalog is huge.
You can also email them and ask them to send the catalog in the mail. herbs@goes.com
well, thanks, I'll do that
WEll, I was finally able to download the catalog for well sweep,, holy Cow! well worth the wait. I got an order ready to go out, but gosh, not sure how to place it LOL guess I need to call them.
I'll have to wait till after my memphis trip this saturday, to see if I can find anything locally.
They have some nice stuff. for sure. Wish I could have visited this place when I was up the east coast a few years ago.
Any suggestions on how to find local herb farms in the Kansas City area? Does anyone know of any? I usually buy online (recently got some patchouli and horehound from Seminole - very nice) but would love to find something local or even a short road trip! Much thanks...
YOu could get on google and type in nurseries in kanasas city missouri and see what comes up, I always find new nurseries in locations i'm going to visit by googling first.
Have you tried DG's GoGardening feature? I think people have been entering a lot more local nurseries lately...
Thanks so much!!!
Most of my herbs come from a local retired lady who has an enormous greenhouse and sells her potted herbs in her driveway with an honesty box. She gets her seeds from various sources. Her herbs are always super healthy and disease free.
Outside of her, I like to attend local herb festivals. They are well worth seeking out. Check your local newspaper.
A few herbs are also incredibly easy from seed. Dill, parsley, cilantro/coriander and basil grow readily from seed. Borage does as well.
WEll, you don't get too many folks with honesty boxes these days, I bought tomatoes one year from a lady that had an honesty box out there.
