Pond Update

Kearney, NE(Zone 5a)

Here are some updated pictures of the pond, er... giant hole in my yard:)

I decided to add a small upper pool for the waterfall, to have more area for plants. It is about 7X19 and 4 feet at its deepest. I wil be plumbing the 3 inch bottom drain to a small settlement pond, which is the circular hole next to it. That will be 3X3X3 when I'm done. Then I will run a line from the settlement pond to the filter, to my new external pump and to the waterfall filter. The savio compact skimmer will run on a seperate submersible pump that will be located inside it.

The first weekend in May is pond weekend!!! Will have lots of help to drag around the heavy liner and rocks.

Here is my cat Gonzo taking her daily dirt bath. She thinks I dug this giant hole just for her own personal amusement. I'm sure she will love the fish too.

Boy oh boy have you been digging!! Where did you put all your dirt?
Have you thought of run off from your lawn going into your pond?? Like weed n feed and other fertilizer? Or are you going to layer your rocks and put the liner over them and more rocks on top?
Also, watch for 'dead spots' by your beach. There won't be any water circulation there, and the waterfall will float all the leaves towards your beach area. But maybe I'm missing something from your picture.
Keep up the good work.

So far I have made 3 landscape berms beside the waterfall berm. I have a huge yard and have been wanting berms to plant for awhile. (You can see them behind the pond in the first pictue). I have tons of perennials to move out there. Lots of hardy xeriscape plants that like the dry Nebraska wind.

I was going to put more dirt around the edge behind the rock shelf to keep run off out and then pile more rocks on top of that. I haven't started yet but I will be ripping out the entire yard on the left side to make an informal patio. Not sure on the material yet. I am so sick of removing sod, might have to rent a sod kicker for that:)

I'm going to try and keep the beach short, like 18 inches, then just a shallower area with no rocks. The skimmer will be over there so hopefully that will catch some of the stuff. I still need to work on leveling the whole pond, especially the shallow end.

Eve, sounds like you have it all thought out. It should be beautiful. Keep us updated with pictures.
I have 3 'dead spots' in my pond and all the crud and algae collect there. So I'm always
hauling out the pond vac.
Wish I would have had the foresight to put in a bottom drain.

Good luck ponding!
