Can everyone tell me the sweetest, most fragrant daffodil they have?
I would like to order about 50 to spread around the front bed, but I want it to knock over the neighbors with its fragrance. ^_^
Thanks,
chris
^_^ Sweetest, Most fragrant daffodil???
I think you could grow tazettas like Craigford or Chinese Sacred Lily [a narcissus] very well in GA. I grew Kendron this year and thought the scent was great! Also color [apricot w/bright orange flat cup] was different and beautiful! Good luck! Brian
Great question!! I
Tazetta Chinese Sacred Lily does not have much of a fragrance; at least down here it doesn't.
Thanks for the info everyone, keep it coming.
Not everyones are blooming yet so hopefully this will remind everyone to do the smell test so we will all know which ones are the best fragrance. ^_^

From what I am finding out, most Narcissus are fragrant, but there seems to be some that are Very, very fragrant. I have all the ones that you all have posted above on a list of the ones that I am trying to collect. Thanks, it is working out great.
From research and peoples experience the Narcissus that goes back to the lines of the Johnquil or Johnquilla, seem to be the very, very fragrant.
Wow, great list dmac. Do you have all of those? Are they blooming now, your yard probably smells wonderful.
Nana, gardenia daffodil sounds like a great name. I am adding the 'cheerfulness' to my list.

I have Mondragon and Erlicheer and both smell great. I don't like how poeticus looks--I like large cup daffs best and even the tiny ones with big cups. I just started liking the double or "fluffy" cupped ones within the past couple of years.
I'm in an apt with a 6x3 flower bed right next to the front door so I get to smell them every time I come or go:) Hate seeing it when they start to fade.
Don't forget hyacinths for spring fragrance. They bloom about the same time as the narcissus/daffodils. I work at a store with a garden center and had to go out there every day just to smell the hyacinths--I'm sure the people who worked out there weren't loving the all day blast of scent:LOL:
Yes, the go wonderful with Hyacinth. I have about 100 hyacinth and the smell is great all across the yard. Here, the Hyacinth bloom first and mix the last week with the Daffs just starting. I only have a few Daffs, thats why all the questions. I want to extend the time that my yard smells awesome. ^_^
I wish I had the room for 100:LOL: Must be awesome! I was looking around the Van Engelen site and found this one too...

My all time favorite is "Fragrant Breeze" which is in bloom right now here in zone 5. My hyacinths are blooming as well and the combination of those 2 fragrances is absolutely heavenly. My neighbor caught my 4 year old and I laying in the lawn downwind of them and tried to figure out what the heck we were doing just laying in the lawn..(strange place for a nap and all....) Usually as soon as "Fragrant Breeze" starts to fade here "Fragrant Rose" starts blooming, which smells like a combination of raspberries and roses. Because of our strangely warm weather right now, "Fragrant Rose" has started blooming as of this morning. I have drivers slowing down as they pass my house trying to figure out what that wonderful smell is. A few of them have stopped at my house to ask. My kids and I get a kick out of watching people walking down the road trying to find the best place to stand and catch the fragrance. hehehehe. You can get both of these at Van Engelen. Here's a pic of them to give you an idea how they look together.
That is really a beautiful display:) I'm going to have to try to get those...maybe someone will put them in a little co-op for the fall since heaven knows, I don't need 100 of them...want 100, don't need 100:LOL:
They look awesome!! I hope 'fragrant breeze' is in one of the coops soon.
I just thought of something, but it's not a bulb. If you really want a fragrance that drifts on the wind try mock oranges. There is a variety called "snowbelle" that doesnt get very big like most of them and has pretty double flowers. It only grows to about 4'X4'. I have it in my white garden border. I don't really notice the fragrance close up, but step back ten feet downwind and WOW!!!
