A tribute to the humble Rock Pigeon

Chicago, IL

Living in the city - I have somewhat limited access to birds more interesting. (the occasional woodpecker, or robin, but mostly sparrows, starlings, seagulls and pigeons).

But I've developed something of a fondness for the rock pigeon. It helps that we share a commute. So here's a few images I grabbed and finally got around to scanning.

I would love to hear and see others interactions with these somewhat maligned creatures.

Cheers,
Liam

Liam (Rogue_designer) is my camera go-to man. He's awesome. I think he just got sick of me sending him all the links to BW forum pix. ;-)

Mwahahah. Before you know it, he'll be at the lake photographing the latest migrating species.

So many people call them "rats with wings," but they do help the mourning doves clean up the seeds the other birds spill out of our bird feeders. Some of them are also surprisingly pretty, with their iridescent neck feathers. Lovely pictures!

There may be more to that than you think . . . they have been seen getting on London Underground trains to move between stations. They even do so often enough to know in advance, which side of the train they need to get off at in each particular station.

I enyoyed your pics of the pigeons Liam! We usually have them in our barn but hey haven't arrived yet. Waitng for spring I think...we enjoy watching them. Thanks for posting and welcome to the BW Forum. Would love to see more of your pics.

I've been there!!!

Welcome Liam.

I do like rock doves. (AKA pigeons) I grew up feeding them popcorn at the local amusement park. I like Squirrels too. (Don't tell anyone!)

This pic was taken on Ft. Walton Beach, FL. I love the coloring of this one.
