Nicotiana?

Abilene, TX(Zone 7b)

I have always loved Nicotiana but never thought I could grow it. I think I tried one year and it did not do well and have never tried again.

This year I saw some and it was so beautiful I had to have it. I know it is an annual, at least here, and I usually stay away from annuals. However, since this thing has been in the ground it has bloomed nonstop and I have two hummingbird moths that just love it. Therefore I went and bought another one of a different color. I am thinking of putting in a few more here and there. It is true the hummingbirds themselves love these flowers? If that is the case I am going to kick myself for not planting them previous years.

Thanks everyone.

I am growing nicotiana for the first time this spring, so I can't really answer your question. Mine are doing very well, so far, but it hasn't gotten hot yet! They're blooming beautifully.

I've read that Nicotiana does attract hummingbirds. In fact, I just went out and bought some seeds to start last week. I also read that they really like this tender perennial nicotaina: Nicotiana 'Mutabilis'. I just purchased a couple from Avant Gardens ( http://www.avantgardensne.com/catalog/product.cgi/1/93/4525/P1/default/N/0 ) -they have a good rating here at DG. I'm trying to remember the link that introduced me to this plant-I think Tabasco posted it-let me see if I can find it.

ETA: Here is the link-lots of great information here: ( https://mywebspace.wisc.edu/mjrock/web/gallery.htm )

Oh and I saw my first hummer yesterday. He was at the feeder, not the flowers, but I didn't care. He hung out for quite awhile eating. I was so thrilled. Now I just need to get the butterflies coming over.
