I need to move some daffodils out of a flower bed I no longer plan to use. We got tired of the deer eating everything last year so we installed a deer fence. This bed was out of the enclosure and I want it to go back to grass. They will probably bloom in the next week or so. Can I move them after the bloom or should I wait for the stalks to die down?
When is it safe to move daffodils?
I've done both and they don't seem to care as long as you leave the foliage on. I've even dug them out, potted them up and put them back in the ground in the fall and they were fine. They are pretty tough!!!
Good! I hoped that would be the answer. I didn't really want to leave them in the yard for too long.
that helps....i just found some teeny ones blooming in a spot where they are going to get lost....i totally misjudged when planting....now they can be moved some where safe :-)
My problem is that I'm always rushing to get the spring bulb orders into the ground in the fall and end up putting them in some interesting spots that just don't work. It's a good thing for me that they are so forgiving about being moved around.
i fully understand the rush to plant
i thought i took good notes last year about where things are & i have been quite surprised about what has come up in various places :-)
I hear you larlienda. Tulips in the lettuce beds must have seemed like a good idea last fall LOL :) Hopefully my newly seeded lettuce will sprout quick enough to get into the sun before the tulips shade it.
As long as you leave the foliage they will be fine. They are VERY forgiving so I learned, 2 weeks ago I moved 4 bunches just inside our woods and within in a week they had buds and are in full bloom now. Looks like King Alfred. Yours should be fine if you choose to move them after blooming.
Kathy
I think I will move them just as soon as they bloom. Thanks for the info.
