Hi Folks,
I have read plenty of posts from people farther north of us that keep black/blue in full sun. I just moved one to part sun because even at about 87 last week it was wilting in full, Houston sun. It was a happy after a nice drink but now I have it getting full afternoon sun for a few hours then filtered for about 3 hours. Will I affect blooming in less sun on this saliva?
Thanks,
Brett
black and blue salvia in Houston sun
I have black and blue in ground in full sun and it's taking over the world! If it's in a pot, it would probably need water frequently, but in ground, once established, it's fine. I didn't realize it was so invasive. It's like mint and spreading by underground runners. I've had to move a few dayliles that were being choked out by it. Mine has bloomed almost continually for almost a year. It didn't go dormant in the winter. I feed monthly with Ozmocote pellets.

Crow, if your Black and Blue didn't go dormant, how tall is it?
Jo
It's BIG. I've actually whacked some at the front of the bed with the weed eater. The tallest, at the back of the bed, is about 2 feet tall with the flower spikes closer to 3 feet tall. I did have problems with meal bugs on it last year. Josephine told me to try a milk, alcohol and water mixture. That worked well. Keep an eye out for them, as they are the only problem I've had with this plant.
Crow
Thanks! Three feet tall I an handle.
I've been amazed at how large some of these salvias actually get!
Jo
Aren't they amazing? I love them and have 4 or 5 different kinds. One of my favorites is East Friesland. It's more polite about staying where you put it. Glad I could help with the Black & Blue. Are you planning on keeping it in a pot or put it in ground?
In the ground. Lowes has some East Friesland, and I think I'm going to have to get one. LOL

I had Black and Blue when I lived in Fort Worth, and my experience was that it really seemed to be thirsty and prefer a bit of afternoon shade the first year. This was during 2006, when it was really hot and dry in the Metroplex. After it established, seemed to be a bit more tolerant to blazing sun and some dryness. In any case, it put out runners like crazy and got huge (at least 3.5 ft tall and wide) the second year!
If I ever plant it again, definitely won't be as a border plant. ;o)
Hi everyone, I belong to the Hou.Plant Exchange and someone posted a message this morn. about Hobby Lobby having a 50% sale on garden pottery. I had to go and they have some really nice pots, trellis, and other yard art. Just thought some of you might like to know,

Thanks for the pottery info. I'll have to check that out. I need two more REALLY BIG pots. I found some I like at Cornelius, but I'd have to get a second mortgage to buy them :)
Jo, the East Friesland did go completely dormant in the winter, but it's back and doing fine. It would work for a border plant. Mine hasn't gotten more than about 12 to 18 inches tall and stays in a clump of about 12 inches across. I'm going to have to battle the Black and Blue, because it's trying to take over the world. I may have made a mistake by putting it where I did. It's really agressive, so beware.
Crowellli, they have some really big pots but I don"t know the measurements. The most expensive ( Ithink) was $89.00,, so $45.
The sale goes thru the 18th. If you go to their website , you can print a coupon for 40% off one non-sale item -- just in case you find something not on sale.

Jana, thanks for the coupon info. I'm going to try to get there before the sale is over.

You're welcome. Do any of the ladies on this forum belong to the Plant Exchange?
