Hibiscus - coming back to life?

Frisco, TX(Zone 7b)

I live in zone 7b (8a really) and have always planted new Hibiscus plants each year. I routinely take my hibiscus trees (bushes) indoors in terra cotta pots, and let the freezes pass by.

But the plants I just replace. This is happening to one of my plants. Am I going to have a complete hibiscus plant again this year?

Yep, it's bouncing right back! That's what mine do, too. Give them a little extra attention and care right now and you'll be fully rewarded.

Amanda,

Please define "extra attention" :)

Hibiscus are tougher than people think, sometimes...

I grafted one to pieces once... cut off almost all of its branches, and then on top of that it got spider mites and somehow it still refused to die.

Congrats on the surviving hib! lol

Well, as lobsterani put it, they are tough. For both this year and last year, I lost most every leaf on my hibiscus because it's not practical for me to keep mine in pots. In February - late March they begin doing what yours are now. When they begin to get those new leaves, I just tend to give them some good fertilizer about once a week along with a one-time SuperThrive (found at WalMart) treatment. The fertilizer that is recommended for these is anything with a low middle number ... or even a 10-10-10. Doing this just helps the process a little more and I've noticed a quicker bounce-back when I've done these steps than when I haven't.

I fertilize every two weeks. Makes a big difference.

Yes it does! You are so right. I love hibiscus ... wish my yard was a locked greenhouse.

Thanks! I'll tend to them a bit closer than I had planned.

sublimaze1,
If you have any more freezing temps this spring, you
may need to cover the whole plant with a tub or garbage can,
as the new growth will be very tender to the cold.

Good luck,
Dave

Sorry, I didn't know your last frost date.
We were down to 35 degrees last week....
