hoya pics

Murrells Inlet, SC(Zone 8a)

I have admitted on this forum more than once that I am not a photographer,me and cameras are like oil and water, the two just don't mix!!!!! I've been tinkering around a little with it lately and finally after having it just sit on the desk for almost 2 years am learning to use it.

I often seen very high quality pics of H.retusa online and have tried and tried to get a somewhat decent pic of mine to post and up until now haven't been very successful in doing so. I took this pic last night in total darkness not knowing if I was even aiming at the plant but it came out rather well I think for a first attempt.

the same applies to H. linearis. I purchased this plant back in sept or oct of last year and it is now about 55" long. I find it to be an almost constant grower and not quite as difficult to grow as i've heard some say it is.

OMG David that is too awesome!! I love that retusa, and who cares if your photo was an accident, it is a good picture. I hope my little piece starts growing so that it looks like that one!!

Oops David, we were posting at the same time. I guess you are faster at hitting the send button than I am. Heee, Heeee! Your linearis is great too. Mine looks really good, but yours is definitely better. There is just no comparison when it comes to your hoyas - I am sure it is a combination of location, greenhouse, warmth and your skill, but I am still jealous. Ha.

Sara,I found that once retusa takes hold it tends to go wild or so it does for me anyway!!!! There's actually about 18-20" more of new growth below what you see in the pic that didn't get included.

Those pics are great! The best I've ever seen of retusa! Since I just recently got to see one for real :) I can say that before I was just guessing what it looked like- that is the clearest pic I've ever seen!
And here we go- another Hoya for the gotta have list!-Really like the linearis too!
They kind of remind me of rhipsalis in a way.....
Keep up the good photography!and post more pics!

Wow! What amazing hoya's! Love the looks of that ratusa and my first thought of that one called linearis was exactly what Diane said ... looks like a Rhipsalis! I would love to see a real close up pic of that hoya linearis foliage!

Great Growing, David!

WOW...what magnificent plants!!!!!

Have they bloomed for you?

Incredible and wow David-great growing! I agree with everyone here. Including that linearis isn't all that hard to grow, but it is a bit slow to start. My one little cutting from last spring is now three though, and all more than a foot long. I'm very careful to let it dry out between waterings, and it only gets a few minutes of early morning sun.

David - beautiful plants, and fantastic "practicing" with the camera. I know what you mean about being like "oil and water with cameras." I have the same affliction - but like you, I intend to keep on practicing. Nice job, and great growing!

Nice pictures David. I am still waiting for my cutting of ratusa to root. Hopefully some day it will look like yours. Keep working with that camera as I think you are on to something.

Here's what i'm doing to make those plants look like that!!!! It's the home brew fertilizer which I mix in triple batches because I use so much of it. I water every plant I grow in both gh's with it and that includes my cactus collection.

I am totally sold on this fertilizer and will never use another to water any of my plants with. There is a lot of skepticism going on among fellow growers as to if this stuff really works,is it safe for the plants and so on and so on. I have been using it now for quite some time and have had zero ill effects on my plants and as you can see from the pics they are all nice and green and very healthy .

Just made this batch fresh yesterday!!!!!!

David: Will you share the recipe?

Long Beach, CA

That is quite the unique container for the stuff. I use a gallon jug & that lasts me quite a while. I have to shake it each & every time before I pour out the tablespoon that I mix with the water, as so much stuff settles to the bottom. Do you shake that container each time?

David your plants look really nice, green and healthy. Befor I clicked on the picture of H. retusa it looked like a forest scene. Way to grow. Thanks for sharing that you use it on your cacti as well, because I was going to email you and asked what you used to fertilize your collection.

Marcy I bought that container from wal-mart,very inexpensive maybe $6-7 if I remember correctly and I do have to shake it before each use as it does tend to settle a bit on the bottom.

When I first saw it on the shelf I knew it was what I had been looking for because it had a pour spout on it.

Tami it does wonders for the cactus as well. Took this pic of my echinocereus pentalophus today

:O .... No, I don't feel another obsession comming on... It's just a hot flash, move on.. That is so darn pretty, and what a beautiful pink. Are you just fertilizing the cactus once a month?

(Zone 1)

Wow! David, Awesome blooms on that cactus! Really beautiful!

Ok, I thought you mixed up the fertilizer and used it full strength to water plants? Marcy, am I reading correctly that after mixing up the batch of this stuff you then only use like one tablespoon to a gal of water? Geesh ... I am such a newbie ... I wasn't even thinking, I would have poured the stuff full strength on my plants - would that be fertilizer overload!

I wonder ... can the beer fertilizer be used for my other house plants? I'm assuming it wouldn't hurt them if it doesn't hurt the hoyas. Any problems with it attracting ants or bugs with the molasses in it, or is it weakened enough by mixing it with water? Does it have a bad odor and stink up the house?

Sorry about all the questions ... but I am learning here and would be soo grateful if my plants could look even half as nice as y'all's photo's!
