Can anybody tell me what grew in these? There were two side by side, on a Weigela(sp), they are maybe a hair over an inch long.

Empty chrysalis...by the looks of it perhaps a Monarch or Queen. I don't think Queens get up to Canada so your best bet is Monarch.
On a good note...looks like it eclosed without a hitch and is flying free.

I always figured the Monarchs ones would be bigger somehow...
It looks like it might have been a male Monarch, I can't see the little line. Here's how to tell:
