Best fertilizer for bananas

Central Texas, TX(Zone 8b)

What is the best fertilizer for bananas?

Richmond, FL(Zone 9b)

IFAS has a good description that might help, http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/MG040.

My solution - I buy a bag of fertilizer from Going Bananas each year at the USF Plant Festival.

bsewall, the link dosen't work. I have the Going Bananas catalog I'll have to look through.

I was wondering that myself

We don't fertilize ours and they grow like crazy. Started out with 29 three years ago and now have 93. High count last year was over 100. We lost several to having bananas. No need to fertilize here. They do like lots of water tho, and full sun.

bananas are considered heavy feeders and like ferts high in potassium ( last number) . The old leaves are heavy in potassium and when they fall and rot into the ground, the bananas feed off them, but I would fert if you want quicker growth-esp in your zone.

Thanks, tigerlily, I heard rose food was good for them.

Sinking spring, PA(Zone 5b)

Calcium nitrate makes them grow like crazy.

Central Texas, TX(Zone 8b)

I'll have to check that out!

Central Texas, TX(Zone 8b)

Where do you get it at?

Sinking spring, PA(Zone 5b)

We actually get ours from a laboratory supply company........but, you can try this website: http://vertigro.com/products/fertilizers.php
Also, some of the better retail nurseries may carry it in 5 pound bags. It's amazing on bananas and heliconias and bird of paradise. It's like instant leaf potion.....but I would jsut apply it a few times a year- you don't want to take away from your fruit production with too much leafing out.

Thanks, I'll check out the link and look for it.

At a loss! Well, shucks. I bet I can help with that. Lots of water, plenty of light, and high pH soils. Bananas should be direct planted with lots of room to send out rhizomes to produce fruit. Dmail me and we can get more detailed, or post- whichever you prefer. F4F

okay..sent a dmail

Oh my gosh. The bird bath is full of cedar wax wings. Absolutely gorgeous. Migrating to somewhere. Another new bird I haven't seen before. Going through the bird book now.

LOL..I did the same thing when they descended on the garden...they loved the cherry laurel trees.

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

Yes. the neighbor over the alley has about 5-6 cherry laurels. My deck will be a mess in the morning. Oh well, love them anyway. So beautiful.

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Sorry about the mix up about the bogus link to the IFAS article at the top of this thread. Somehow a "." crept into the url and it wouldn't work. If you are still interested, here is the correct url: http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/MG040

Central Texas, TX(Zone 8b)

Thanks, bsewell, it works now!
