Brugs 2008

We are having a fabulous sulty day today (80 degrees and humid!), so I dragged the kids out of the basement for a breath of fresh air!

rosa uberraschung (cutting from JustJen several years ago - my first successful cutting and my very first bloom...and it only took 3 years to get it! LOL!)

Can anyone tell me what's up with the droop end? Should I just cut if back below the green, or will it firm up?

And here's another REAL drooper!!! Possibly another Rosamond, but lost the tag somewhere along the line...

My 2 big'uns are still in the basement. Too early for everyone to stay out, and there's no way I'm dragging the big boys back and forth. Which begs the question, how cold can they tolerate overnight? Can I leave them out for a few nights if the temps are in the mid-to-high 40's?

And here's a little cutting someone sent me totally unsolicted last fall. I think it was AuntB... Please forgive me if I have that wrong. I cannot find my notes and it was such an incredibly kind thing to do... So, heeeere's Versi Peach!

My brugs have been outside for several weeks now.. temps in the 40's and even some low 30's at night with no ill effects.. as long as there is not a hard freeze, they are fine.. I think the lowest it got was 31 one night and if did not frost so they all looked fine the next day.. wish I could say so for my plumerias.. forgot they were outside and did not realize it was going to get so cold.

Sequee, the drooping can be fixed with stakes. It's probably due to weak growth due to lack of light. Once they are back outside, they'll gain strength. One thing did make me wince — calling those seedlings by a named cultivar. The only way to have a Rosamond is to get cuttings from one. You can give the little noids nicknames, but please don't use cultivar names.

Ok thanks. All the rest are from cuttings, so I guess the other 2 will just be baby Rosie's. I appreciate the tip!

I will try to prop up the2 droppies - hopefuly they will regain some strength. I decide to schlepp them all back into the basement since it was only their first day out and cool temps due for the next few days.

As always - thanks for the input. I only have a few, but they are so dear to me!

The drooping is from too many leaves on top, stem not strong enough to hold them upright. Could take a few big leaves off top, or will be ok until stem gets stronger.

Carmel, NY(Zone 6b)

If I cut off the top, I will try to root it. I've had limited success with rooting greenies, but I guess it's worth a shot!

Again, thanks for the responses. I'm basically a veggie gardener, so all things "flower" still overwhelm me, especially these beauties. I was finally rewarded with blooms on 3 of my plants last year, so now I'm out-of-control...though I've resisited all temptation to buy new ones every time I go to Logee's. I have to keep over-wintering space issue at the fore-front when tempted by Tropicals.

The support from the "Incredible Brug-People" has been so cool throughout my learning experience that I resisted the urge to toss everything after the year of the aphids! It was such a mess that I've permanently banned them from the house, though. Thank heavens they are happy with the dormant period in the basement, with a few friends...

Lima, OH(Zone 5a)

Please don't cut off the top! Just take a couple big leaves off, so it won't be so top heavy. Or, just leave it alone, in time it will become stronger.

Well, that's easiest still! They've all been returned to the basement since it is quire cool out today and predicted to remain so for most of this week. Drat...I'm soooo ready for Spring!

Thanx!

Lima, OH(Zone 5a)

Me too! I've BEEN ready for spring! Supposed to have snow tonite and hard frost Monday nite..............

Carmel, NY(Zone 6b)

Nooooooooooo!!!

(Tammie) Odessa, TX(Zone 7b)

My brugs are all happy with the temps in the low 40's at night.. doesn't bother them at all.. they are growing nicely.. I even found 6 small buds on one I took out of the potting shed yesterday... yea.. my first blooms of the year.. and that particular one looks like a bunch of sticks with a few tufts of tiny leaves.

Poor babies you teased them with the great outdoors and then confined them to the dungeon again...

Carmel, NY(Zone 6b)

Good thing I did, too. It dropped to 22 degrees last night! Talk about a shock to the system. As it was, I only took them to the front room in the basement - much cooler than the back room with the W&D, gro-lights, and furnace! They were happy with their day in the sun, though, and the promise of more to come. The radishes, peas, and broad beans seemed happy enough this morning, too. Go figure!

22!!!! Ouch! that would have killed everything here. My iris have been blooming for over a week.. second year for them and they are putting on a nice little show. Dad is coming over today and several of my brugs are going in the ground.. it is 70 right now and sunny. There are some good things about West Texas.. early spring!

Carmel, NY(Zone 6b)

Odessa's nice, but even that wouldn't make moving back to Pecos ok!!!

It was 80 degrees on Saturday - now this! Pretty soon we will all be running around with colds. It's really hard to dress correctly, even with layers. Should be back up to 70 by the end of the week.

Brigham City, UT(Zone 5b)

It snowed today. Got up to 43 degrees and I opened the garage door so the plants could get some sun. Even with the cool temps the potted brugs from last year are getting little leaves and the others from seed are doing fine. I am so ready for good weather. It is going to be cool for most of the next 5 days. Friday it is to get to 63 degrees. I think the brugs/plants will love it when I open the garage door.
I can't wait to put them all outside. One more month to go.

(Tammie) Odessa, TX(Zone 7b)

oooh, 43.. could not handle that.. it was 92 here today.. tomorrow is going to be cooler.. I think in the 70's or 80's.. sorry to rub it in.. we will be sweltering here very soon and you will be comfortable and laughing at me.. your brugs will be happier than mine then too.

60 yesterday, 70's today and tomorrow. Wish I had time to drag everyone outside before work, but...

I don't envy you the hot weather - you can keep it! 92 is way more than I want to deal with. I moved up here from Florida and have NEVER regretted it. I guess that's why God made such a big planet - something for everone!

Happy gardening!

Redford, MI(Zone 6a)

I am in SE Michigan and it appears the nights will not be getting lower than middle 40's. I have eight brugs in a room in the basement and they want to come out. I can slide them into the garage at night if necessary. Also we are expecting temps in the middle 60's with some showers, will that be good for them? I am so anxious to get them out but don't want to be over-anxious.

92* !! Is that Normal spring weather for you? I would seriously wilt! LOL!

(Tammie) Odessa, TX(Zone 7b)

that is our highest so far this year but next week will be warmer... we usually settly around 100 most days through the summer.. some over some under. I do remember 111 one summer some years ago... it does get hotter here too. Rarely under 90 once we are further into spring.

(AnjL) Fremont, CA(Zone 9b)

ugh! 2 yrs ago...we had a bad heat wave 114*.... and no AC! too hot to even water the plants! :o(
