New Brug - No ID

Hammond, LA(Zone 8b)

I bought this baby today. I bought her at a non-profit orgnaization's plant sale today and there was not tag. Can brugs be ID'd wothout blooms? Can I pop her in the ground as is? I took a side shot to show how tall she is. Should I remove those small leaves along the bottom of the stem?

Thanks! Jennifer

We would not be able to ID her even if you had a bloom, there are just too many look-alikes out there. you could plant her in the ground if you feel there is no danger of more frost.

Thanks, I am sure the frost danger is over, but the temps are supposed to be 47, 43, 41 this weekend. Will she be OK?

Jennifer,
If you would like to nuture the plant to be bigger year after year. I'd repot it into a deep pot. Then sink the pot into the ground in a sheltered area from high wind and noon's sun. Morning sun, afternoon shade would be best. This way when frost threatens our area. You can dig up the whole plant to shelter it indoor over winter. In order to have large brug with many bloom, they need to be several years old to provide that kind of blooms. And yes, pinch off those lower growths to keep it in a tree form (standard). It's also a good time to stake your plant and "train" it growing up straight if you can. Alternately, you can plant it in the ground. And cut it down plus with the ground in winter and mulch the plant with few inches of mulchs to protect the roots for the following year's growth. Either way it would work.

Well, I can definitely do the deep pot, moving it inside thing. One th other hand, I have no area that can provide "Morning sun, afternoon shade". The area I have will be in full sun from about 11AM-4PM. Will this be OK if I water it every day?

They will do just as -- or nearly well as we can afford the condition. Your gardening situation sounds just like mine. No Eastside planting available.

In my neighborhood, most neighbors have them out in full sun. They appear to bloom earlier in the season, but the leaves will droop during the heat of summer. But they do flourish year to year. It's your choice.

Another dumb newbie brug owner question: Does this plant have it's "Y"? There is a space where limbs divide and shoot in opposite directions (you can see it in the picture). Is that is?

OK, I am going to put her on the South side of the house, but put a screen and a large hibiscus on her west to block some of the afternoon sun.

Spendid idea Jennifer, best of lucks. And no. Those look to me like side shoots, not a Y-formation yet.

When the branch folks out like this (this isn't a brugmansia but a plumeria), that signal your brugs are mature enough and ready to make flower then.

This link is entitled Brugmansia Anatomy. Scroll down to leaves and compare the leaves on your Brug to the photos in this site. Leaves from above the "Y" are asymmetrical, but I believe Lily is correct about this being from a side shoot from below the "Y".

If you can ...shelter it with other shrubs /trees.
Just imagine it will be like waiting to open a Christmas present. You will love it what ever it is I am sure. Good luck with it.

I would still plant it in the ground. It is a no name Brug so I would not take the trouble to bring it in, in the Winter. Also they just do better in the ground. That way if you can not watter it for a few days it will not suffer as much. From the looks of the plants it will be hadr to train it to be a standard. If your wanting a standard I would order one from one of the on line stores, from people who are members of Dave's and ask for one that would be easy to train. That way you can pick the flower type and color. There are a lot of great Brugs that don't go for big $. You can also get one that is from above the Y but if you do thay sometines bloom so low that the blooms touch the ground.

We are not far from you and we are looking at low 30's for Monday morning.

Thanks Betty, that is a great link! Crissy I appreciate the encouragement!
