Hi, I have heard so many different things, I'm not sure what to do anymore. You know, you get so much stuff and then you just don't know what to do.
Since we are all in Texas I figured someone could help. I germinated a bunch of stuff under lights during the winter, and they turned out really good,
What I need to know is, even though it is plenty warm here, do you usually just sow outside in the ground or do you germinate inside and then move. Seems like the ones I did inside look better. But I feel dumb sowing them inside when it's so nice outside.
So anyway, what have you found to work best. I lose seeds outside, forget where I put them, smart stuff like that
Need help with seed planting here
I do 50 50 so plants I grow in the house and I start them about Jan 1st, the other half I planted late Nov early Dec outside.. and very few things I plant on Good Friday.
Lorraine, whether you start the seed indoors or direct seed in the ground depends on what you are planting. There are a lot of variables involved. Some seed require warm soil to germinated and would rot if planted in cool or cold soil. Those seed would be candidates for starting indoors early if their required growing season is very long. Seeds such as pepper seed take a long time to germinate and grow up to fruiting size. Giving those seeds a head start could mean the difference between getting peppers this year or just pretty green plants. Tomatoes need a head start because the plants quit flowering once the temperature reaches 95º. So the plants need to produce tomatoes a few weeks before it gets hot. Ripening is no problem in hot weather. Some seed is so small, like begonia seed, that having a controlled environment is the only way to ensure germination. Other seed don't transplant well. Those seed have to be sown directly into the ground or sown into a type of pot, such as peat or paper pots, that can be placed in the ground along with the plant. Some seed are so expensive that starting indoors is the only way to ensure that you get as many as possible to germinate.
You may be forced to pick and choose what you start indoors by the lighting setup you have.
Thank you so much for the help. I have a strange set up. Don't have greenhouse so I took a small bedroom and put up 2 shop lights and hung 2 over a table I had. Not pretty, but I just keep the door closed!!! It has 2 large windows on 2 sides.
Lol - I use kit, livingroom, really any place with a good sized widow or a grow light. So your set uo - for a lot of us is very normal!
There's a house I go by all the time and they have this huge, beautiful greenhouse. I can hardly stand it.!!
You mean other people are putting stuff on the table , windows, top of the freezer, any place with a flat surface and a light of some kind. Cool, I'm not alone!!
Mentioning GHs,,,,,Ck out the info on the hoophouses.
Cattle panels & 4/6 mil plastic.
I have 2, approx 26' x 8' & 6' tall!
Works for me for now!
:~)
I've seen pictures here of them made with old windows. Do you have a picture, I'd love to see it.
I'm headed to City_Sylvia's tomorrow evening. I'll get up some pixs up this wkend.
Thanks, one of these days I'm going to find one I can use. An extra bedroom with lights hanging from the ceiling isn't cool. Also, from the outside, looks like I'm growing more than plain ole flowers.
My daughter is a deputy sheriff and she says I should expect a knock at my door. HMMMM
