This is Aechmea Black Flamingo - an older hybrid. It's a small plant with very dark foliage and an unusual combination of colors in the influorescence.
I have Aechmea floribunda in spike, a plant I've grown for almost 30 years without blooming. It's a really big one and I'll have pictures in a few weeks. (This one used to be in the genus Streptocalyx before they were all merged into Aechmea. BTW, Aechmea is considered to be one of the most poorly defined genera, and I'm sure that some day that it will be completely reworked when better genetic methods are applied.) I have lots of other Bromeliads coming into bloom so the camera will be getting a workout this week.
Dave.
Aechmeas - no lack of color
Nice!!
Nice pic Dave. I couldn't find A. 'Black Flamingo on the FBS site though. Could you post a pic of the foliage too. (Picky aren't I?)
I can't wait to see your pics as you post. Alot of our Aechmeas are coming into bloom too. I use this site to try and identify alot of what I've got, so keep 'em coming! Ta
