MG Plant sale-Tyler area
This might be a good time for us to organize an East Texas RU for later in the spring. If you make it down, I'm the grey haired old man with lots of plants.
Come see me, I like to talk gardens too.
DD
Drooling here but won't get to come and shop ~ sorry. Hope y'all have a great time and much success!
LOL on the "grey haired old man with lots of plants." Like, do you think you will be the only one? 8 ))
Pod
Not the only gray haired but when you add lots of plants and likes to talk, I'll be easy to find. A fellow MG told me he was bringing some nice Pride of Barbados trees.
If you see anything you like, let me know and I will save for a trade for you.
I am headed off to Nac to the SFA sale. Gotta get there early to get the real prizes.

DD
DD ~ I hope you have a large day! Look forward to hearing what treasures you bring home...
I did have a large day. Tired out now so will tell of my prizes later but did get gingers and other neat stuff.
Nap time for the old geezer !
Nap time????? I didn't see a hammock in the yard? hehehe.
Glad to see you survived the SFA sale!! love to see what you got.
so far everything I brought home last saturday is doing fine, all planted and seem to be happy in their new home.
I do know I ma looking for a banana tree for hubby he loves eating bananas LOL
would a Pride of Barbados tree make it in my zone?
Phyllis
Mibus ~ I have a POB but keep it potted so far. Will look forward to the answer.
Sure hope DD wakes up soon... LOL I am sure the sale can be exhausting.
well I can always add another pot here LOL moved the orange, grapefruit and lemon trees next to the house on the porch for tonight LOL
From what I understand you have to get there early look over the plants find what you want run like a bat out of h*** when the gun goes off and try to get the ones you want without someone else grabbing them away from you or out of your wagon LMAO..I think it would be just as much fun watching everyone then actually doing it
Not me... I hate crowds and would feel like being in a mall the night before Christmas... I'll stay in the woods. 8 )
I do not like crowds much either but worth the hassle for the great plants and prices. I am awake now but still wore out. With this cold snap coming I have to move all my tender EE and hibiscus to safety. My SFA plants or in the garden cart and in the GH.
I have a POB in ground for years and makes it fine. May loose it's leaves a time or two but blooms well. Mibus- is the POB that Cocoa brought me the red one ? Think that is what she said. Glad your plants are doing well. You will have to come back and get a real load next time. If there are things you want from the plant sale, tell me and I will get them for you.
I am ripping out all plants in front of the sunny side of the GH to make room for the tropicals. Here is some of the things I got at SFA.
5 types of ginger some not hardy here.
Hibiscus tropical-Red wave
Stromanthe sanguinea tricolor
Porphyrocoma sanguinea
Jap. farfugium gigantea
Dutchman's pipe vine grandiflora-hope this one is perennial as it says.
Looks like another busy afternoon.
Us gardeners are a bit crazy.
D
Pod, if you see things from the plant sale list I can get them for you and mail unless too large.
Glad you survived the melee' ~ 8 )
It sounds like you either knew what you were looking for or had done the research ahead of time. You picked up some interesting plants. Were the ones you wanted in large demand?
Thanks for your offer on the plant sale plants. Easier for me to say no from afar. If I went to the sale I would be doomed. As it stands, yesterday I bought more plants from a local couple that set up and sell plants occasionally. They have alot of the common ones but I always have to stop. Have picked up a few that are not the plain vanilla box store varieties. Yesterday I got a bottle brush and a large variegated Hoya from them. The first was one I was wanting, the second one I needed ~ yeah right! Like I said, I do better staying away. So don't tempt me... LOL
I will hope your preparations for the cold are not too much effort. We're to see mid30s here so not too worried except for a few.
You mentioned a tropical bed. Will you be preparing it to keep the tropicals in it overwinter? This was an interesting thread on this subject that you may have already read... a variation should work in the south... http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/828480/
Pod
I have seen and read things by Brian before but am nit as brave. Some of my favorites I will just not chance. I just pack my GH and keep them over but not really growing that well just survive.
I am lucky in that a friend is a volenteer and gets to shop a day early and got a few for me. Most of the things I really wanted were not in that much of demand. I had my priorities listed and went to them first. Last year they had the Florida or what I call wild azaleas. Really wanted more as they did well but none this year.
Should have gotten Bear's Britches but did not. Think there are trades since they spread so fast. That also is in the need/want area which gets blurred easily.
Better go check my new things. Also got a nice box of named DL in a trade, great selection and hugh plants.
Spring is so great.
Sounds like you better add a bigger GH to the need list! LOL
I am considering that idea. I have a window that could become a door and connect the add on easily.
Project for later.
And the temperature is still lower than "my" age so here I sit!
Hi David, I was tempted to make that sale, just couldn't make it happen.
I don't grow anything red and didn't bring you a POB...so...wasn't me, sorry. I have started most of the Spring cuttings and hoping they make it though the next few nights. If so I'll have some more goodies for you. I'm really eager to get back to Jacksonville and do some more shopping:0)
I have no idea what to get the next time LOl I know I want to do more here but so much space and not sure what to put where and of course there is convincing DH to do more "gardens" through out.
we have enough hose to reach the back of the lot I do know that so watering isn't an issue
I know I want perennials, Clemetis(love them always have),Amaryllis, flowers that attract butterflies and humming birds (DH gets a kick out of watching them come to the feeder) iris, flowering trees to put in in place of winged elms and sweet gums we took out that were dead or bunched together too much.
I really need to find a day to just sit and watch where the sun goes and where the shade stays out back though since we have a number of big pines around the place and on neighbors land that shade areas throughout the day.
I just don't know ...it is overwhelming to try and figure out what to put where ..hehehe...I've always dreamed of having a place with flowers all over and such like yours and now I have the room for it I am lost.
Pod-temp way below my age so will be getting in the house sooner than later. Do have to cover the tomatoes though since they are heirlooms that Dave gave me.
Cocoa- I forgot about your thing against red :). At the plant sale there will be that double pink flowering almond. I can snag one for you if you would like. Anything else on the list too.
Mibus-A new area is so much fun to dream and plan. Lots of work but... My place is just 5 years old. You gals will have to come back soon. Many thing about to bloom unless the weather does not cooperate. I have a heaven for butterflies and can share those type plants with you. More gardens=less mowing.
Ready for the plant sale to be over as watering and taking care of all that stuff is a pain. A friend is coming next week and help me thin a few trash trees. Then more beds....
D
Mibus, just plant it all! You can move it later. Your Dh should be getting used to the idea of less lawn by now.lol
David, if you would, please get me a Flowering almond and any trumpet shaped crinums. Give me a total and I'll send you the money. It may be a few weeks before I can get back down there. Good luck at the sale and have fun!
Cocoa-
Will do my best at getting you a crium or two and the pink flowering almond. Several have sent me a list so hope to get all of them for folks. Looks like my truck will be loaded on the return trip too.
Don't worry about the money, you will have something I want sometime.
D
I commented again to Dh today about more plants when he commented about more grass to mow as a guy came from over by longview today and dug a few roots out and Dh took out some more of the spindly sassafras trees.
He likes to mow since we have a nice front deck rider but I think he is getting the picture about flower beds and that I want a couple apple trees and pecan trees some day out back.
And ya keep in mind that any tomato and pepper plants I don't get rid of soon are going in the ground so I will have plenty to share if all goes well
Mibus
Pot up those Sassie trees if you can as they are great trade bait.
Only a short time till slae and this cold has slowed down some of my things. The Angle wingedd begonias have not grown much so I see a price cut. But guess I have enough biggies to do well. Last year I sold out.
Neat happening for me. A photographer that took pictures of my gardens called and wants to do a coffee table book. How about that.
D
3 more folks came by yesterday and got plants from the yard-still don't see any holes where plants were taken. That's 12 in the last 2 weeks.
Morning ~ a coffee table book! Wow, we will know a famous gardener ~ 8 )
I love the angelwings. They are easy to propagate. They do well in our heat. Why do you never see them in the box stores? Instead they sell the cheesy little blooming round leaf begonias. If a gardener could see them in August, you would sell out!
I think box stores cater to the folks that just want instant beauty not real gardeners. They buy full size plants and do the Joe average landscape design. I call it the mustache planting...The long bed in frount of the house with box woods in a line then two tall bushes on each end. In front they put a bloomer that always dies. This way they can sell things ever year. Then they have a hugh lush grassy area that they water, fertilize and mow every week. Boring.......
Would you like some cuttings of the Abgke wings ? I have about 4-5 different ones.
D
What Angelwing colors do you have?
Most have a silverish leaf with different hints of colors. One is a light green cane type with pink flowes. Others bloom peachy, and other colors, will have to check them to see. I grow mainly for the interesting foliage colors.
They look neat grouped together on the porch. Also grow the orchids and African violets out there when warm. They do well and like the high humidity.
D
Dd I will pot up the young ones coming up.......
the trees themselves are tall skinny ones they are much taller then I am by far I do not have a way to transport them with them being so tall and skinny.
I'm sure they got that way due to the wonderful bamboo that was towering over them too.
are you saying you want some young ones ???? LOL
Oh no, I have plenty of them but they are good to trade if you post them.
I mosed almost all of my sale plants out to the sunny area. Will give them another shot of MG. I will be glad when they are gone so that I can start redoing some of my beds. But then will have a ton of things to pot up again to give away or trade.
I have millions of Lion's tails coming up from reseeding. These are neat plants. Will save some of them for folks too.
You need to come back and get a load of things. As you remember, I have plenty for the taking.
D
I will be back after this weekend as you are busy and I am plus I am picking up your plant for you from LouC and bring it back with the one for Dave too
Can't remember--what am I getting from LouC?
Also tell Cocoa that I got her the flowering almond.
In the past 2 weeks I think I have counted 14 folks have come and got a load of plants from me. That is great. I believe that what you give away will return to you ten fold. This has proven true with the number of things that have come my way recently.
Hope to do well at the sale. This $ is my plant money for my habit of plants for the year.
Thank you for the Flowering Almond. Good luck with the sale!
Do you or Mibus have any interest in a seedling of Hibiscus sabdariffa http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/2113/ it's an edible hibiscus. I have a few extras and need to get them planted out. If either of you want one let me know, save me the effort of digging it up again.
sure ya know me i like those lol
Up early to take my plants to the sale this morning. Hope I can get them all in two truck loads.
Better come early if you can to get the rare ones.
Wish me luck. Hope it goes well as this is our big fund raiser for the year.
DD
Best wishes today ~ let us know how it goes.
Good Luck DD!! and yes let us know how it goes and we'll talk tomorrow a to when we will meet up again
It really went well but I am "Tuckered out". whipped, worn to a frazzle.
The day started out with temps lower than my age but warmed to a sunburn by arternoon. I was top seller with almost $600. Others were close to that so the organization did well. Took 3 PU loads and returned with just one, so that was good. Picked up some things for friends and promised trades. As the sale slows in the afternoon it turns into a RU between members.
Must work first of the week out of town then get to boxing up some trades.
Wish some of you could have made it as bargins were esily found. Dave and his family showed up. He told me he might be in the area and show. Neat guy and family.
DD
After rest, maybe I can add more.
Shoot!! Forgot about the Jacksonville plant sale DD worked today. DH and I meant to go. I need reminders on top of reminders. For those looking for DD in the future, he looks just like Levon Helm! Let us know the details of how the plant sale went.
A book on your gardens. Now that's impressive. And I've been tickled over a local who "wants to come for a tour". Someone else wanted to know who my gardener is. I do it all myself, thank you very much, except for DH and DS digging and the like now that I have a bum leg.
I planted a flowering almond this past year and it's coming back up. It got hugh last year and had a heavenly scent. One of my favorite shrubs.
And ya'll don't be afraid of the SFA plant sale, it's not that crazy. There's lots of stretch out room and usually lots of each plant. If you wait and show up a couple of hours after it starts, there's still lots of really good picks.
I'll be looking for you in six months!
