Storms

Columbia, TN(Zone 7b)

Heard on the news that some really bad storms had hit Texas and that part of the country. Hope no one has anything worse than a power outage.

Certainly hope so, Molly, we don't want any of our forum people to have trouble because of those nasty storms.

You guys let us know everything is okay with you, please.

They aren't very good at covering events happening at the other end of the country. Have you heard how bad it was?

MollyD

Luther, MI(Zone 4b)

I didn't really pay attention to what they were showing on, I think CNN this afternoon. It did look pretty bad where they were showing it. They did say there was widespread power outages, so I am assuming if we don't hear from some of them, they have no power.

Columbia, TN(Zone 7b)

Hope that is all, just the power. Oh my I just thought about all those chicks under lights! How will they keep them warm tonight without power??

MollyD

Luther, MI(Zone 4b)

I was thinking the same thing. I hope they have generators like we do. By living in the country, we have to have one because we never know when we lose our power. But since we haven't heard from anyone, I am beginning to think the worst.

Conroe, TX

I'm in Conroe, north of Houston and we are doing fine here. It was drizzley and cool today but no bad weather.
There were tornadoes west of Ft Worth. I think most the bad weather was in central TX and into Arkansas.

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

we are fine. well, it was pouring yesrterday morning, and i had a sinus cold, but went out to help the little baby bantams back in and cover their pen with plyboard. the gutter rail DH put up didn't work. i got caught in the pen while hail pelleted down and got soakded down my back from the gutter overflow.

so i am sicker today. got out of bed cause i can breather better sitting up, besides, he has been hogging the computer lately LOL.

nothing i have taken has helped, but a few minutes ago i recalled one of those email suggestions i got YEARS ago saying when your child has a chest cold, rub the menthol on his FEET for faster/better absorption.

i used a menthyol spray for aches and pains. well i am breathing well enough in two minutes to make it back up the stairs and then sit at the computer. so thought i would pass it on.

it is windy. sometimes that cause us power outages. and it is fire season plus tornado season here. so i REALLY appreciate you'alls concern.

So glad to hear from all of you in Texas! The news made it sound so devastating but in 60 seconds they really don't give us much in the way of information!

Tf when I was a kid they made us lean over a bowl with hot water and vicks vapor rub in it. You put a towel over your head to concentrate the vapors and breath them in. Seem to work very well from what I remember! Hope you start feeling better real soon.

It's raining here so I've had a lazy morning. Woke late (8am!), fed the dogs and I'm sitting in my bathrobe having breakfast as I read and answer messages. I'd better enjoy these while I can cause once all the babies get here late mornings will be out!

Wanted to ask those of you who have ponds what they might cost to build. There use to be one here, previous owner had if filled because he had young kids and was afraid of them drowning. I want to dig it out again. Someone told Paul it would cost thousands! I can't see why when it's just removing the dirt from the space (and we have places here to use the dirt so no hauling away involved).
How deep do those things need to be to store water?

Thanks and so glad no one was hurt or lost property.

TameraFaye, glad to hear you arn't in any really bad weather.
Sit back and take it easy and make DH make sure the little ones are secure.
Glad you found something to help you breathe easier. I'll have to remember that.
Don't get any sicker. Stay out of the rain and hail !

Conroe, TX

There is a pond here, but its been here long before we were. I'm not sure how deep it is. Several feet most likely. Even when it is dry it doesn't seem to go down much. I know it is farely shallow on the sides and is home to lots of turtles, we see them sun bathing on branches that have fallen in the water near the bank. There is one that is more like a small fallen tree that they line up on. Wish I could get a picture, but anytime you get near they dive in.

Columbia, TN(Zone 7b)

They probably think you've got a lean and hungry look smedgekles LOL

one day we will have a pond. i bought a louise riotte book used from alibris.com called catfish and lily ponds. great reading and all you need to know for a great pond of any size.

DH has a short day of work today. i hope to be well enough to go buy chicken feed and take the kids shopping. i am barely up, with feet sprayed and a cough drop. haven't even been down to check on chickies...

look pretty calm outside, maybe taht wind blew away all the allergens.

Luther, MI(Zone 4b)

TF, certainly hope it did. We had a storm last night too, caused a power outage just before 3:00AM. DH started the generator because the little ones are in the garage and we needed to keep the light on them. Pretty calm today, though. And, you take care of yourself, we need you. ♥ ♥

Molly, I remember doing the same thing when I was a kid. I still use Vicks Vapo-Rub when I have a cold or even when my bronchitis kicks in. Of course that didn't help this last time when it went so bad. But usually it does.

GG

Columbia, TN(Zone 7b)

Gotta look for that book!
Must be real bad Granny when Vicks doesn't help!

It was. I was too stubborn to go to the hospital although I should have. It took a "z-pak" and 5 days of prednisone to clear it up and then it went into an asthma attack. Now I have an inflamed trachea from it. So, I was bad.

I told DH not to let me get away with that again. He should have insisted I go to the hospital when it started.

Columbia, TN(Zone 7b)

These days hospitals aren't that great Granny. I fight tooth and nail not to even go near a doctor let alone a hospital. Can't blame you for not wanting to go.

MollyD

Conroe, TX

Granny you better take care of yourself. Can't blame you for not wanting to go to the dr though. Even if there isn't anything wrong with you they invent something so they can give you meds.

Conroe, TX

Thought I'd post this. I took this one morning when it was in the 30's and there was a fog over the pond. It looked really neat. The picture is okay but in real life it was better.

Looks like magical creatures might live in there!

MollyD

Conroe, TX

I've only seen turtles :)
DH says there are snakes and I prefer not to see them.

Columbia, TN(Zone 7b)

Maybe they're just enchanted fairies that look like snakes but aren't really ;-)

MollyD

Conroe, TX

Ha, if that were only true, but they are really slithery slimey snakes so I'd rather not see any.
Saw 3 last year. One behind the dog house, which is up against the chicken house. The dog was cutting up like crazy so my husband moved the dog house and there it was. Also one in the chicken house up on the roost. My son found that one. And one in the chicken yard under their feeder. One was about 4 feet long, EEKKK

Columbia, TN(Zone 7b)

we have garter snakes mostly. Harmless but they can give you quite a turn if you don't spot them before you're about to step on them. One lives under the deck in front. I watch for them but I don't chase them away because they help keep the field mice population under control.

MollyD

Luther, MI(Zone 4b)

Well, I don't have a problem with snakes, as Molly says, they keep the field mice away. Of course, when you do something stupid like get bit by a blue racer, you have the privilege of cursing a blue streak. It happened when we first put up our henhouse. We put it in an area where we had tried to grow a garden. We had put deer fencing around the area to keep the deer out. DH saw the racer which was caught up in the deer fencing. He thought it was dead, but I saw its tail move, so I got his pocket knife and started to cut it out. I forgot and cut its head loose before I had the body loose. It snapped back and bit me on the hand. I told it if it moved again, I would let it die right there. It became quiet and let me cut it the rest of the way out. I didn't notice it had broke the skin until I started to walk away from it after it was loose and had gone out into the woods. Then I saw the blood. Went inside, called the hospital, and they told me to call poison control. I did, and the lady laughed at me. Of course I was laughing at myself too. But then she asked me when was my last tetanus shot, and it had been over ten years, so I had to go have another. I am still laughing about being stupid.

Columbia, TN(Zone 7b)

Hate those tetanus shots and you just reminded me I should get one soon :-(
