re melting snow

in the great white north, snow is finally melting, today I cleaned out my first flower bed it was amazing even got my hands a little dirty, stuff is actually coming back to life, hyacinths, tulips and daffs are poking out of the ground yes spring is finally here but only on the south side of my house hhahah
on the north side I do not want to look since it is still under three feet of snow lol will it ever go away

the snow has made me lazy, and I have not started any seeds yet but I think tomorrow is the day the girls have a PA day and they will want to help so tomorrow it is, with dirty littles hands and to many seeds in each peat pod we will plant so that summer will look beautifull with many vegetables and lots of colorfull flowers since the girls will want to plant some in every color.

it is very funny to me since most people plan their flower beds with specific colors and plant sizes with my garden I let the girls decide and it seems that everyone that visits just loves what we do with our garden lol it is the creation of a 8 and 9 years old they have a different view on how a garden should look, kids love to get dirty so why not let them get dirty and help at the same time enjoy gardening with your kids and grandkids and if you do not have any borrow them the parents will not mind the time off

Ok so its time for me to shut up just got all warmed up at the thought of gardening I guess

I had to smile at your description of adult planning versus child planning :-) Thanks for coming in and lending us some cheer.

I used to sell plants at a farmers market, to encourage my daughter to help me I had her make up her own hanging baskets and planters to sell. Pots that i would put 6 or 7 plants in, she would put about 20. Needless to say people would come looking for hers every weekend which always seemed to look twice as good as mine. There was no planning for colors or textures just stuff them full. By the time she was 6 she had earned enough to by herself a trampoline, a tv, and an enormous collection of Beanie babies. Now that she's a teenager I've lost her to her friends. But I hear from others that once she's past the teenage stage I may get my helper back. :)

I love what you do with your kids - the fact that you allow your children to make the decisions - that is fabulous!!! I have a 5yr old and a 3yr old and they are pretty active with me in the garden...they have a few plants of their own of course I don't know if I could allow them to take over my gardens...LOL. I enjoy the time with them and they always help me out when putting planters together and pulling weeds and watering etc... They enjoy it but sometimes I think I enjoy just being with them more...... :)

Kids and gardens are made for each other - full-stage riots, both of them hahahaha
Kids are a joy, and so are gardens with a riot of colour, right?
I say "let them have at it!" and you'll be pleasantly surprised, I'm sure.......

well I am glad to hear that you enjoyed my posting

Yesterday I started to clear some of my larger beds lol the ones with no snow hahah, since I moved to this property last september, I had no idea of spring flowers, well to my surprise I have a very extensive iris collection and day lily collection now I just have to wait to see what color or colors will show up. The girls planted more seeds last night, I still think they do not even bother reading the package it is all on what the picture looks like so next year I will purchase some with no pictures so they will have to learn the name and go to the internet or my plant books to find out what is in the packages.

They are making very good use of the rubber boots I purchased last month exept they think that they are higher than they are it seems that every night I have to clean and dry them lol

And yes growing up on a farm in my teens the last think I would ever have wanted to do was garden but it seems that when it is in the blood by the time 25 comes around it become impossible to not start to garden again.

my great niece has been helping me in the garden since she was 2 and is getting to be a great little helper now at 7

the veggie garden is the hit with her and her little sister - they can find the first ripe strawberry faster than the birds

august it is like having a healthy buffet in front of them all the time they are with me - the i'm hungry gets a 'go look in the garden' reply
