posyblossom. My bull frogs are back..but keep hidden for the most part. I hear their sweet songs all day long. Spotted one the other evening after dark hang around on a rock by my pond. As I approached he jumped in the water. Got to see him swimming around for a bit ( thanks to underwater lighting). Then he hid in some rocks. The picture is of the first bull frog I had visit last spring. Still my favorite of all that have passed thru my pond! He was very big and scared me half to death as he jumped right in from of me
into the pond. Was not expecting such a large frog when all i had seen up to that point was the little tree frogs. Love them all now!

That is one healthy looking Frog BeaHive☺ If you look closely at my frog, he is one skinny-looking dude, so I hope he fattens up a bit like yours☺.

Yes he was a big guy! Don't worry..yours will fatten up! Spring is a time for many bugs & good things to eat for them! Enjoy !

I just saw a bull frog out at my small pond last night! Its great to see the frogs back already... I even found a baby turtle in my pond today at lunch, he's only about the size of a quarter :-) I had one in the same part of my pond last year and got worried that she would die in there over winter... as I had lost a big frog the winter before:-( I now have her in the house and this new one in her spot in the pond... I live right near a huge bass pond that my grandfather created a loong time ago, so turtles and frogs are very common ... Ive seen one out there so big I think it could eat a nice size bass!

Thought Id share the creation story of the bigger pond, since its a great story and I think ya'll would enjoy, keep in mind grandpa is now almost 90! Back in the day he and a buddy that lived across the pasture from him decided they needed a place closer to go fishing, well wouldn't ya know they decided to make themselves a pond... right in between the two houses, you know they wouldn't want to go far... so they went up to the hardware store and bought some dynamite and came back and dug themselves a hole straight down about 10-20 ft... they lite that dynamite and dropped it in the hole and ran! Yes, they were fine but they made my grandmother so mad... all that clay all over her roof. When I heard this story I was on the ground rolling, I thought they had taken the backhoe out there and made it like they did when they created the other pond further out in the pasture - my uncle had to correct me, and I thought he had to be joking at first... he wasn't! Hope ya'll enjoyed my little family story.

Great Story! Write it down for all the next generations.

NOW if the dynamite went in today......there wouldn't be any need for hooks and worms! Better not put the idea in Grandpa's mind.

I hear the frogs all the time in /near the pondless stream but there must be something wrong with my hearing because when I try to locate the 'croaker' - the sounds seem to be coming from everywhere. They are little ventriloquists!

Dallas, OR(Zone 8a)

I enjoyed your story Gardening NC. Yes write it down and save for future generations.
Missingrosie..it is hard to locate the frogs most of the time. It is hard to tell where the croak is coming from. Do you ever croak back
at them. I do and sometimes I really think they are answering back.
Polyblossom...I captured pic's of two frogs today. One was on the rim of the pond waterfall..not a great picture as I did not want to get to close and have him hop away. Think he was out it the sun to long..he almost looked black!

my second one was under the water fall. Big one too!
(excuse the pond ) Clean out coming up soon...

Sweet! I love the frogs, don't have any in my pond yet.

Hillsborough, NC(Zone 7b)

Bea - your frog looks like he is made of rubber!

No, I have not tried croaking back at the frogs. It is a thought. I'll have to do it in the wee small hours of the morning because if my husband observed me croaking back at frogs...it would be all the evidence he needs to support his case...........PLUS, --knowing him--- I'd find my frog-croaking self on YouTube!

Durham, NC(Zone 7b)

rotfl, I can imagine us out there croaking... thats too cute! Id try it but my pond is so small it is easy to see the frogs if they don't disappear first... the croaking might scare them off - Id dont think id be really good at it, but it never stopped me from meowing back at my cats, barking at the dogs or howling trying get them to howl...

Durham, NC(Zone 7b)

BeaHive - That first picture does look like a fake frog... well, the one with him perched next your plant marker, you sure you didnt pose him? hehehe

I found a picture of 'Lil Girl' - the turtle from last year that has now moved in the house and is MUCH bigger now

My frog is real...not made of rubber..he is not fake. He is very strange looking compared to the ones last year. I wonder if in fact he is not a bull frog..but another type of frog. Will need to do some research....
Don't let husbands or others stop you from croaking back at the frogs...go fo it..its fun.
gardningnc...your lil girl is so cute. i have wanted to get some..but it is cold here in the winter and some species I hear would go after my Koi. I really do not need any more indoor pets to care for. Two dogs..and 1 cat plus of course my two daughters is plenty for now.
A few of my Koi..taken today . Hard to get all 13 to sit still for a family photo.

Looks like Frog heaven at your house Bea. My frog is a lot fatter today, but he was looking a me suspiciously so I didn't take another photo.

HAHA GardeningNC,great family story and just where was your Grandfather while I was digging my pond by hand☺and that is a sweet little turtle you have there,he doesn't seem to be afraid at all.

"croak,CROAKKKKKKK",well, just practicing☺my DH will be soooo impressed☺☺☺ my meowing is better than my croaking ☺☺☺

My Bea, what friendly, well behaved fish you have. Here is a photo of my rather rowdy ones from yesterday, eating peas☺

polyblossom..it is more like... ribit..ribit deep down in your throat.
That they understand.. :)

Athens, PA(Zone 5b)

HAHA BEA! Ribit, ribit,Oh this is going to take a lot of practice. I surely will not practice the awful screaming they do during mating season.....

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Cute story and pictures everyone, Lu what kind of pea are you giving your Koi, maybe I need to give mine some to load them up with vitamin C. for their ailment. Love all the picture. Odd enough my bullfrog hasn't returned to my pond yet, or at least I haven seen or heard him sang lately, and it's much warmer here.

Athens, PA(Zone 5b)

Kim, the peas are just plain ole canned peas, whatever brand is on sale☺It is amazing how quickly the fish recover from dormancy with a few canned peas in their tummies. It is so fun to watch them suck the inner, soft part and leave the skin behind☺ Once they start eating them, they will wait in the same spot every day and I swear they watch the house, looking, looking for me to bring out their dish of peas. The cat is so jealous, I have to leave some peas in the dish for him to eat by the pond so he can get what he thinks is his fair share, which is hilarious to observe☺☺

I hope your frog shows up soon. I had 4 wonderful bullfrogs last year and had so much fun watching them.
