Chicks and Eggshells

Francestown, NH

Hi All,

I have 6 Buff Orpington chicks, 2 weeks old today and they love eggshells. Is it O.K. for them to eat? They actually peck them right off my fingers:-))

Thanks for any advice~

It's calcium for them. Some people have told me not to let them have it so they don't become fond of eating their own eggs. I use to feed eggshell to my finches and never had a problem with them eating their eggs. They seemed to know the difference.

We always give our chickens the egg shells and don't have a problems with them eating their own eggs. Molly is right, its calcium and they need it.

I grind eggshells in my food processor till very fine, then give it back to the chickens. I haven't had any problems with them eating their own eggs from that. We did, however, have a hen that was an egg eater in the last flock we had. But that was just her. The others didn't eat them.

That's what I heard and my boyfriend, who's from Puerto Rico, grew up with chickens and said they're fine. I was just double-checking...Thanks!
