What's your breeding program for producing Sizzles???

Cave Creek, AZ

As I'm kind of new to the world of chickens and have developed this addiction..I mean... interest in breeding Sizzles, I could use some imput on the hows & whats of getting stable lines of nice quality Sizzles. Has anyone nailed this down yet or is it mostly still a gamble?

I currently have 4 roosters "working" on this. My Frizzle in with my Silkies, my Silkie in with smooth crosses, my Smooth cross in with my frizzled crosses & my Frilkie (frizzled silkie) with some more smooth crosses. My two best Sizzle hens were with a Silkie roo untill this week when he went off to the fair. I'm just starting to get chicks from these pairings and am anxious/excited to see what I get.

Would love to hear what's working for you if your willing to share!

Ask your question at either the asbc or americansilkiebantamclub yahoo groups. There are a few folks there who breed sizzles. Marge Ussary of Sandia Park, NM is one. One of those groups (don't remember which) had a discussion on them within the last week or two.

I've never had frizzles, so I can't help you there. How did you do at the fair?

Hey Suze;

Thanks for the info! It's been like pulling teeth to get any feedback. Good thing I have a background in breeding dogs so I have a decent understanding of genetics. I appreciate the help & will track the ladies down.

The roo that went to the fair was borrowed, not mine, so I don't know how he did yet. I just tonight hatched out the only egg I got from him that went full term. Looks like its a splash with a top knot. Don't know if the mom was a silkie or a sizzle yet. Got my fingers crossed for the sizzle but will be happy either way...even if it's a roo!

Thanks again!

Got a question for you ladies. I've hatched over a hundred chicks this year and been fortunate to have had only two that had problems. This latest batch I've got two with some kind of hip problems. They start out with one leg that they can't seem to control. It splays out and they can't seem to pull it under themself. The one chick has now developed the problem on both, looking like it's doing the splits, and can't walk. I'm worried the other might go the same way. Any ideas? Any solutions? Guess I can't really complain considering how many chicks I have that are healthy but, I hate having to put them down.

Is that the same as the splay legs you splint with the bandage? I had one chick this year that was much more severely affected--I don't think the hip sockets had ever formed and I had to have it put down. But I did try the bandage splint described at the Silkie site:

sounds like spraddle leg tie it's legs together in 3-5 days of makeing them use the legs usually u can remove them and they walk normal again. if u do not the older it is the harder to correct and it could result in not fixing it.

i'll answer ur breeding question after i get food made for supper for all the kid's.
