The Problem:
When trying to assist users at Dave's, I've (on several occasions) ran into an annoying bug (feature?), that won't allow the posting of characters common to directory paths, etc. Most notably a front slash. When say, a hijackthis log is posted, the forward-slashes in the program paths are dropped (I'm assuming, by Dave's forum software), causing the entire line to be one, long word. It's (semi-) readable if each sub-directory is capitalized, but it's quite annoying (imo).
The Perfect Solution:
If possible, an Admin could adjust the filters/settings/abilities for this forum only [1], (there should be a way), to be able to post "special" characters.
The Work-around:
I hadn't considered it, but when trying to emphasize a command to be typed, I decided to put the command in bold. I didn't even think about the switches in the command line, designated by front slashes (remember DOS? *g*), and while proofreading, I noticed that the slashes were there. About that time, I remembered they shouldn't be. =)
So... putting the text in bold (same as an HTML bold tag) will allow the path to be displayed. This won't help in the case of someone posting a log, as there are just too many lines to add the tags to. But, it will help when directing someone to a specific folder on their machine for information, or to seek a specific file. Every little bit of help, helps. =)
If any Admins happen to read this, please allow the ability to post slashes and/or angle brackets in this forum. =)
HTH,
Eggs
[1] I can understand why such measures should be taken, but for a forum with such a specific intent (such as Computer Talk), the ability is almost a necessity.
FYI: Hah! I found a work-around for posting paths here...
