Destructo-Squirrels: Lessons Learned

Whiteside County, IL(Zone 5a)

After sitting on the patio all winter, I moved the Seed barrel to the side of the house this weekend. BIG mistake. Guess that's when a little stinker discovered it.

We should let squirrels run the country. They're smarter than all of us. Can get out of any jam. Work around any obstacle. It's annoying.

LOL. Yah, good point!

I think they're what people call "weapons of mass destruction."

Check this little destroyer out. He had just knocked down the bird feeder and was enjoying a feast while my cat sat inside and watched (making all kinds of horrible noises). I should let the cat out after him. Of course, he'd never catch it --- the little squirels are way too fast!

I think plastic is too easy for them - we should only use metal containers. I had a large plastic bin like yours and they chewed through it the first week it was out!

My cats are friends with the squirrels that come on our deck. I have one persistent female who knocks on the door when I open the drapes in the morning. She knows I will hand her a nut or two. Some mornings she's determined to come in the house and I have to keep pushing her back out the door. Can't complain though - she keeps the big pigeons (rock doves, aka city pigeons) off the deck, raids their nests to keep the population down and keeps the cats entertained. She's also has my DH wrapped around her finger with her "prayer pose". We ran out of nuts one day. DH couldn't take her woeful look when we didn't have one to give her, so he ran out to the market to get a bag. LOL!

RN,

Yep, I think I have to go to all metal! You know If I would have kept the feed out, they would not have chewed through. Guess they Showed me!!

I love the picture with the cat's head in the foreground. My cat used to get to go outside. He almost caught one one day and had a little tuft of fur in his mouth. The surprised look on his face was hilarious. I send the dogs out all the time, but to no avail.

Mermaid, I think we're going to need some pictures of that friendly little squirrel!!

Mermaid... tell you what I'll do... I'll rustle you up some Georgia squirrels, stop off in Illinois and pick some up from mrs. ed and bring 'em out to you and you and your hubby can have a field day feeding them. I'm sure others would gladly send you a squirrel from their yards. Imagine! You'd be like the Angelina Jolie/ Brad Pitt of the squirrel kingdom... one adopted from each state.

LOL. Angelina and Brad Pitt!!!

Mount Pleasant Mills, PA(Zone 5a)

I'll gladly furnish some from PA, too. You can start with this guy!

Ahhhh. You know you'd miss them if they were truly gone.
Our squirrels get along with the birds. They just chow down together. Sometimes the birds with charge the squirrels over deck territory.

My squirrels were pretty well-behaved until now. I guess only because I kept them fed with the birds.

Our squirrel is high in the tree right now holding on for dear life because of the wind. I don't know why but sometimes he climbs up there and stays all day long. I feel sorry that he has no life!! So far he has been very well behaved and not a problem...maybe I've invite him over to chat sometime!!

The Ozarks, MO(Zone 5b)

Here is a pic I just took of him, it looks like there may be a cavity there? Hmmmm...maybe he's not so innocent!

Maybe he's stashed some yummies there.

Bought this ring to keep some corn for them and away from the sunflower seed.

What a cute pic, I love that!! We have a corn feeder for this one but he has never used it! Never thought about him stashing food in the tree...I still can't believe he is fighting the wind up there! Maybe something scared him...who knows!

Okay kids…

I was getting confused on my own thread!!

Let's head over to gardenpom's thread for general squirrel pictures. http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/823767/

(Unless you've got some bird-related squirrel destruction, of course.)

Thanks much!!
