Growing Brugs in Texas.

Big Sandy, TX(Zone 8a)

This is only the second time I have posted on the Texas forum. I found a thread in the Brug forum posted by my wife and thought I would post it here also.

Our TXRU is in Arkansas this Spring, but we will host a couple of weekends of plant days/swaps/getting to know one another.

We're about an hour north of Tyler ( the Loop - NOT, LOL!), out in the country, between Gilmer, Big Sandy and Hawkins.

We're about 35 minutes north of I-20, an easy shot for most people in the Metroplex and west of there.

I am thinking the weekends of May 24th and May 31st would be the best. Oh, May 31st is Memorial Day? Yeah, that would be good.

All you Texans be thinking about it and come on out to East Texas! We have a tee-niney little house but really big hearts and love to share!

Lindsay, OK(Zone 7a)

Great list - and I would love to come and learn more about these stunning plants. Just starting out here and LOVE them... I will keep checking in and see if I can make one of these dates.

It's a 5 hour drive, but my DH owes me an outing for our anniversary. Is the 24 a firm date? It's the day after our wedding aniversary. :-)

Jacksonville, TX(Zone 8a)

This sounds great as I have been wnating to come see your lay out there. May bring some of the MG in the area.
Wow at the brugs you grow...
See you in May.

I hate the Tyler loop, may go to Kilgore and up Hwy. 271. Will get directions as time gets closer.

Humble, TX(Zone 9a)

Hi kenboy, what a hugh group of brugs. I didn't know there were that many different ones !!!!
I would like to find a good source to purchase some. I live in Humble which is north of Houston
surely there are some in Houston. The pic is so beautiful. I got your recipe from the other forum and mixed up several batches and now I see a revised version. Did you see where someone found a site to buy Tea Tree Oil really cheap?

Jana, I'm not familiar with nurseries in Houston, but if they are like some I have run across, local nurseries usually sell by color rather than a named Brug. As you get Brug fever, you'll want to try your hand at pollinating. One advantage of having named Brugs is in knowing the plant's ancestry. A word of caution about buy through e-Bay. I have bought plants from various sellers. There are many reputable sellers, but there are also sellers from whom I will never buy again. Unfortunately, some change their names every so often.

I have bought a number from SeedSprout. Brenda is a DG member. Her plants are always in great condition and large.

JT Sessions owns Country Garden Nursery. He's a DG member also. His plants are large and healthy.

Impower is gordo on the Brug forum. Her plants are slightly smaller, but also a bit rarer. She sells only on e-Bay as impower56.

There are a few others, but these should bet you started.

Thanks Betty, I know what you mean about some sellers on E-bay. I got stung several times and said I would never buy from E-bay again. I ordered a few plants from Wayside Gardens at the end of March and got my order yesterday !!!
The iries were bareroot, small and the poor little 'Thai Beauty' Caladium is horrible and so tiny. I ordered
clematis from Jerome at Koi (not the ebay site) and haven't received them yet, forgot exactly when I placed the order but it has been too long. They were on sale for $9.59+ shipping. +++ then I went to Lowe's Sun. and found some of the same
clematis for $5.98.++no shipping. hahaha just gas and I was going there anyway.
Thanks again for the info.

Wayside Garden is not what it used to be since it was bought out by Park Seed. I had bought quite a number of plants from Wayside before the sale. The plants were always large and healthy. I always looked forward to seeing a new catalog. I've placed about 3 orders since the nursery was sold and have received poor quality plants.

Lindsay, OK(Zone 7a)

Most places to mail order are small and sad when you think about what you spent.. burried treasures is one of the few places that are good sized for the price.

La Grange, TX(Zone 8b)

Mitch, I must say that I have been pleasantly surprised with some of my mail order purchases. UnfortunateIy Buried Treasures was not one of them. Twice I ordered a Thai Euphorbia millii and twice I received a 3" wilted and soiless rooted cutting. The roots were not wrapped or protected in any way. I really have no choice about ordering online unless I want to drive to Austin or Houston. La Grange and Bastrop have a small nursery each. I want to make a special trip down to Rosenberg to Caldwell Nursery. I have been drooling over photos on their website. Mainly because they sell a few dwarf citrus varieties and they are closer to me than Acorn Springs Nursery.

Lindsay, OK(Zone 7a)

See mail order just in my mind cannot be trusted.

Humble, TX

There must be some in Humble because I have seen some beautiful ones in our neighborhood while walking with my DH. I have always wondered what they are, and now I know.

I was a camp counselor in Big Sandy so I know exactly where it is. I don't know if I could come in May, but I would love to see your plants the next time I drive up that way to see my mom.

Kenboy I'll have to make a note of this so I can try to come and see and meet ya
Ddetex gave me my first one last weekend and I can't wait for it to bloom already.

Humble, TX

We have only lived in this house for two years, but already I have aquired many plants. Last month I dug up a whole bed of bannana trees to make room for tomatoes. I have a "lily" bed for hibiscus, daylilies, iris, and other lilys, an "herb" bed that somehow always gets a few vegetebles too, and a vegeteble garden in the back yard.

When I was young I told myself I would never "mix up" plants like my mother did....but now I find myself with plants I love that don't quite fit a theme. I am tempted just to stick them in the "herb" bed and admit that as I grow older I appreciate my mother even more.

I got lots of great plants at the College Station round-up. It was better than Christmas!!! I even got 3 different brugs. I am so excited!!!! I can't wait to plant them all.

I'll tell you what, with a list of Brugs like that, you could just about live on the moon and I'd find a way to get there. Count me in. Anybody want to car pool? I'll have my new Prius (I hope) by that time. Can anybody say 45 mpg???? And I bet I can fit all kinds of things in that hatch.

Anne

Jacksonville, TX(Zone 8a)

Keep us posted Ken as I will come with a car load of local MG folks.
I have been wanting to come see you and the things you grow.

We have not set a date yet but when we do, we will post a link to the forum we have with our Web-site. That way everyone can post what they have on their own thread and it will not be so confusing. We are not posting until after the TXRU in Arkansas because we don't want the host of this years RU to feel like we are not supporting them. The TXRU started with a group from a Brug org. but has never limited itself to just people from that org. If anyone is interested in comming to the Arkansas RU on the 10 & 11 of May, we would love to have you. I will get more details soon.
