The things people have lots of seeds of are usually easy to grow - lupins, columbines, foxgloves, poppies - and they give you lots of seeds to trade in future. You can get seeds to start you off by sending people self-addressed stamped envelopes - look on the Seed Trade Forum for plenty of offers. Or, if you prefer to trade seeds, you could buy some sort of tropical fruit (passionfruit, kiwi, papaya, kiwano) - they often have hundreds of seeds in, so you can make lots of trades straight away. Sometimes, you can get them for nothing if you can find a squashed or rotten one in the store and ask them for it!

Hello,
I am also fairly new to gardening. You will soon learn that collecting seed is almost as much fun as growing it! LOL I have a few extras from ones that other gardeners have sent me and some of which I have bought. If you would like, send me a SASE and I will send you some. Email me and let me know.

Help us help you, Lilbud,

How much space do you have? Are you interested in flowers, vegetables, or both? Got any specific ideas about what you'd like to try?

Among vegetables, beans are about the easiest to grow---you almost have to try to mess them up. Squash---especially the so-called summer squashes (zuccini, yellow crooknect, patti-pan) run them a pretty close second.

Singleyellowrose is right: collecting seed is as much fun as growing it, especially when you start learning the stories behind the plants. And it give you a gardening-related something to do during the off season.

Don't worry about being new, and not knowing much yet. We were all at that point once. Most of us, no matter how experienced, will tell you straight out that we're still learning.

Is it okay to ask for seeds? You betcha. Let us know what you'd like, and I'm sure somebody will step up to the plate with it.

I have to have a plan? Can't I just put the flowers and vegetables in places were the packets say they will grow?and water and feed them?Last year some things grew in spots. That is what I did for them.
A Friend told me that I should pull them all up.I saw some in the garden book.I can't think of the names now.My yard is medium size I guess. No one lives close and no fences.I guess I can make it big or small.I do not think I better get too big at first do you?

Hi lilbudgc!
I 'd be happy to fix you up with some flower seeds that are easy to grow for beginers. I'm zone 5 too so they should do well in your area. E-mail me if you'd like some

Saint Helen, MI(Zone 5a)

Hi lilbudgc,
I also live in zone 5 and will send you some seeds that are easy to grow for beginners. If you want some send me an e-mail.
If you don't want to have a plan. As long as you give the plants what they need you can plant them anywhere. If you want to plant tomatoes in the center of your front yard do it. Do whatever makes you happy!
Remember if you have any problems there will be someone here to help you all year long.

Hey Lilbud, plant radishes as soon as your ground quits freezing hard. They come up right away, and you get something to eat, that you grew yourself, in about a month!
