Chickens jumping like popcorn !

It had to be the funniest thing I've seen them do yet.

I went out to their coop and could see them walk a couple steps and then just hop into the air (no wings used) about 6 inches high. They were all doing it.

From a distance as I walked toward the pen, they looked like popcorn ! With all of them doing it, it was crazy !

I thought "Oh my gosh, they're having some kind of fits or something ! "

When I got closer to the pen, I could see that there had been a hatch of tiny little gnat-type bugs and they were swarming all around everywhere.

The chickens were having a ball catching them ! They did this for about 15
minutes. I was so lucky to walk up at the right time to get to see such a funny sight.

Eventually the swarm of tiny bugs dissapated, and the girls all went back to
scratching on the ground and then went and got a nice long drink of water. I guess they enjoyed a tasty treat and a little amusement. I know I sure did enjoy the amusement.....and was happy to let them keep the treat all for themselves.

I love watching the chickens chase after flying insects! They are very intent and will mow over anyone in their way. Watching the farm animals is better than watching tv(funnier too!)

That's so true. This would have made a good 'Funniest Home Videos' to send in.

You're right about them being intent. Only they weren't running at all.
There was such a thick swarm of bugs, they were all standing in one place, jumping straight up and down. All white chickens, looked like popcorn for sure. Pass the butter, while I get me a Coke. :-))

Where's the video camera when you need it. That had to be a sight. Chickens can be entertaining, I love to watch them.

I like trying to figure out what they are thinking by the way they are acting....Had our girls out of the pen for some "grazing" time yesterday and noticed that the one I consider to be the smartest was acting strangely. Kept stretching her neck up nervously and cocking her head, as though in deep thought. We have many hawks, so paid attention and yes, not a minute went by before I noticed one take off from a nearby tree. Even the crows were caught off-guard, since it was perched, but our hen knew......

Would like to say, for the record, though, that the rest of the girls would have been hawk bait if we weren't there guarding, as they weren't aware. Amazing how different they are, huh? Just like people......

watching chickens teaches you a LOT about people!
