Luna Moth Sightings?

Barnesville, GA(Zone 8a)

I am quite sure this is the earliest date I have even seen a Luna. Lucklily, he/she sits on my window screen as I type. This is the smallest one I think I've ever seen, about 3"x 3" (wings tucked)--is it a male? Is there a way to tell?

I know, I know, my dang camera quit.

Hearing that they are becoming rare, could we post our sightings here? I sure hope the 'experts' are wrong.
As much as I hate sweetgums, as long as they produce Lunas I'm happy.

Lucky YOU! I would sooo love to have Lunas in my yard! They are some of the most beautiful moths! I guess I need to start my sweetgum seeds! :-)

We don't get Lunas this far south :o( I still get warm fuzzies seeing everyone else's photos :o)

Am still waiting to see those Regals Donna!!! I raised Ios last year - haven't seen any around this year yet.

Becky, come weed my garden, you can have all the sweetgum seedlings you could dream of--be careful what you wish for!

BTW, this is a very open invitation, lol.

I've already seen a Luna too (about 3 days ago). It also was on the small side but still beautiful to watch. It was sunning on the west side of our shop. I've already seen more butterflies this year than I did last year. Hope this will be a better year for them. I've got lots more flowers for them than I did last year.

I am a newbie to this forum - and I have a LOT to learn so please be patient with me.... Do Luna Moths lay their eggs on Sweetgum trees?? I had never heard that - but my husband HATES Sweetgums ....mainly because of those gumballs..... but it would be worth keeping some around (outside the yard of course) if that is what the Luna's need..................

I work in a plant that "attracts" all types of moths - and I saw one this morning - only about 3" long though, but he was pretty.

I seen luna's for a good month now, sometimes as many as three in one evening. Seems like I won't see just one, I'll see a couple in an evening.

P.S. We have a gazillion sweet gums. I should see what else they like, there must be something around here that is making them happy.
