A few of our spring daffs and hyacinthsspring is here! (-:

Cincinnati (Anderson, OH(Zone 6a)

Our bulb garden just started blooming this past week. We planted just a few new bulbs and then hoped some daffs from past years would come back. Not so many returned--probably because I cut back foliage too early and we water these gardens in summertime--but enough came back and were newly planted to make a nice jaunty garden along the walkway. This is our first 'wave' of daffs--mostly cultivars bred to bloom early with some hyacinths and the pansies (from the store).

We have some fancier daffs that may bloom in a couple of weeks--those are mostly white daffs to compliment the azaleas. I consider that our second wave. We don't 'do' tulips because the critters love them. I did plant about 200 muscari, but it looks like only 50 or so came up. Critters, again, I think. (Ignore the drought killed spruces in the pics--we are working on getting these replaced.)

Does anyone else have pics of their bulb gardens?! Let's see some others!

And our hyacinths are blooming along with the daffs for a pretty combo!

A close-up of our little early daffs...

Some 'woodstock' hyacinths with the little daffs (can't remember their names but they are very common ones). This combination is a bit abrasive, but is OK especially on grey days...

And a container of 'Blue Jacket' hyacinths and dusty miller with H. 'gypsy queen' in the background. The 'gypsy queen' were planted to 'color echo' the heucheras but the coral bells are slow to come up this year...

And I am just loving this combination of the little golden daffs with the big trumpets this year. A little bright/gaudy, but just what we needed during this dreary springtime...

And these lovely nodding daffs are planted under trees in the back yard. They were from Gemini_sage's garden, and a lovely addition to ours---They must like their site--they have multiplied quite nicely since first planted...They bloom at the same time as the periwinkle ground covers.

So who else has pictures of their daffs with other plants and shrubs?

--I would love to see some other ideas for bulb bloom in the spring garden... (-:

a very peaceful and pretty garden- its so great for spring to finally arrive- I saw some real daf. buds yesterday in one corner of the garden today, but most are underground still here. You have a very lovely garden, tobasco! sarah

Tabasco, I'm envious -- I have another week or two before my muscari start blooming. Your gardens look so peaceful. I didn't plant daffs last fall, but after watching this thread I'm ready to plant tons next fall!

This is what I have -- not much compared to you all, and nothing's blooming yet.

Thank you, everyone! It's been fun to work on this bulb garden--and I'm excited the landscapers are coming this week to replace the spruces and hollies in the front that we lost in the big drought last year. Then everything will be a good bit better looking.

rev--you didn't plant daffs this year?! But you always have a really nice bulb show in the springtime!?

Well, I hope when everyone's bulb gardens come into bloom we get to see more pics! I love spring bulb bloom! So fun after a long winter. (-:

Lovely to see the "whole" picture. I will post some of mine when I actually have some to show. Only a couple out so far here. I like the 'Woodstock' and the yellow narcissus together. It has a Victorian charm about it. Thanks, Patti

Tobasco, just four pots of muscari, tulips and lilies like the pot above. No daffs. Lately they've rotted on me. I think I've figured out why, but not until I decided not to plant them. Next year I'll get started with some pink ones.

These are the only four left from a collection of doubles from Van Engelen's. I'm not sure of the ID

Not everyone can deal with ajuga, but for the moment it's a nice partner with these daffs...next month I'll be tearing my hair out and the ajuga!

I do wish I had more Arum Italicum (the white veined sword leaf) -- it makes a nice combination with this big daff--but I can't seem to get it to thrive in our garden...

And another fancy one partnered with plain ivy.

I don't know which one this is, but I thought it was pretty with the neighbor's house in the background...

Nothing special here, but against a simple green lawn these are rather elegant...

A few for in the house--- One of my favorite things about daffodils is making little casual bouquets for in the house. It reminds me of when I was little and our mom would allow us to pick daffs for our teachers. With nine kids in the family, she must have had a lot of daffodils in the garden! I suppose kids don't bring flowers to the teacher anymore...

Thanks for your sweet comments and sharing a few of my daff pics for this season... (-: t.

Tab, They are ALL gorgeous! You have such a pretty setting, too!

I love the yellow with the neighbor's forsythia.

Thanks, Illoquin. I appreciate it.

My 'Accents' that were supposed to be 'Pink Charm' are blooming now--they look like little soldiers along the sidewalk. Not exactly how I thought it would look when I planted them on a cold and windy November day! Oh, well. I guess I can move them 'in the green' so I know what is what...

I'm going to remove all the daffs in the pic and try again with my scheme. Now that I've tried several kinds I'm going to settle on one or two varieties and go with them. The trouble is there are sooo many pretty ones to choose from!

I saw a woodland yard in Dayton on Sunday that had probably 5000 daffs planted in a swath and a huge river of muscari. Quite something.

And these are some potted tulip bulbs from Lowes that I am repotting and setting around the patio. So far so good on these--the deer can't get at them! Knock on wood!

Wow, Tabasco, those are just stunning! Your landscaping is so lovely. Wish I had the resources to plant in those quantities. Somehow I always envision "drifts" and get "patches" instead! LOL

Cincinnati (Anderson, OH(Zone 6a)

Thanks, bookerc.

I know what you mean about patches. My son told me our yard looked like it had 'Flower Acne'! Not exactly the look I was trying to achieve! )-:

I buy all my bulbs on half off sales or even in the bargain bin at the end of the season for not many $. It kills me to pay full price for them. And some have reliably multiplied and then I divide and spread them out. Some have died off too because I cut the post bloom green off at a certain point when it starts driving me crazy.

And did I say on this thread I bought the potted bulbs from Lowes for $3. a pot They were getting rid of tables full of the just sprouting tulips because the weather had been so bad and no shoppers had come by to purchase them. I felt like I scored on those. (Can you tell I love a 'deal'?!
And, Sorry, I know it's impolite to talk about $$.)

Mackinaw, IL(Zone 5a)

Not impolite at all, when you're sharing "strategies." LOL I just can't seem to walk by any sort of gardening display without some bulbs or seeds sneaking themselves into my cart. Last week it was some Oriental lilies that reminded me of my wedding bouquet. DH doesn't know about those yet. Think he'll notice when they bloom right by the front door? (tee hee). I'll just tell him I was feeling nostalgic and romantic.
