I was out looking for wildflowers when this male Red Wing started screaming at me. He glanced in the empty food dish, glared at me, then screamed at me again. I refilled the dish. He ate and was happy now that I am properly trained.
Spoiled Red Wing.
LOL Trois...cool pic! Thanks for the laugh!
Very nice pics trois!
Thank you delrose and pell. I know my place now.
LOL!!
Too funny!!
I love the redwings. They (males) always sit and loudly announce their arrival before settling in to eat. I can't tell if they are telling everyone else to back off or if they are calling all their buddies to come join! They remind me of blue jays in some ways with that obnoxious bird feeder behavior...
They are characters all right. I am surprised at how quickly they become trusting.
trois They are pretty birds with the red and yellow distinctive wing markings. They have arrived in Missouri and love to nest around and in cattails on waterways, ponds, etc.
Cuckoo
I like them a lot, and wish they would nest in my cat tails, but they go to the big swamps. The males still come to eat every day.
Sometimes my feeder attracts them as they are moving north but seem more interested in the other birds at the feeder as If to say, Hey? Whats going on here then soon they fly away from a tree I have near the feeder. Yellow Redwings are pretty too.
Cuckoo
The males are on my feeders every day now. I like them all.
They really must enjoy cattails - I saw two perched on some cattails in the ditch along side the freeway! Must be the insects and amphibians they are dining on
When I was growing up in Oklahoma our old pond was covered with cattails, and Red Wings. They were not found any where else. I loved the sound they made.
I don't get them at my feeder either. They stay around the pond and marshes half a mile away.
We have a nice, large pond with cattails all around and I have never seen a Red Wing near the pond. I wonder what turns them on to some and off to others.
They come into our feeders somewhat, but mostly stay out in the marsh. From the sound in the morning and evening there must be a thousand of them.
I have seen maybe 200 at one time in the tree tops in the evening. I love their sound too.
Great catch on the pictures. They are pretty bossy.
Thanks, cpartschick. They were so shy at first I was surprised when they became bossy.
Just watching them through the window, you can tell they are a little pushy. LOL
I didn't know what good trainers they could be to people though. ^_^
