I bought her a few years ago from either Wal-Mart or Lowes. She bloomed her first and second years ('06 and '07) and actually started blooming again in December of 07 and had a few blooms hang on through January. I pruned her hard about 2-3 weeks ago and am hoping this is her "big" year.
My Niobe
She's growing!!!
I just bought 2 last year from Lowe's and got them in a little late so they really didn't do much. I can't tell you how they've taken off already, it's amazing! I was just trying to read if they need any fertilizer and I saw where someone suggested a little rose fertilizer with a higher middle number to encourage blooms. I was just out fertilizing the roses so I think I'll go sprinkle a bit on them and see what happens. Hoping I'll get some nice blooms this year! Good luck with yours!
Very Pretty!!..Jeanne
jlp222,
BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!!
Sherry
Thanks, I counted 52 open or partially opened buds, and about 25 unopened.
Now that she is finished blooming, do I need to cut her all the way back, or leave her alone?
I am afraid that I have no experience growing in your zone, so I'll leave the response to others. I just wanted to say that the combo of Niobe with that coleus in the background of one of your shots is fabulous. I am going to look for the same or similar on my next trip to the nurseries, and plant them at the feet of my Niobes and Omoshiro. Thanks for the inspiration!
I also noticed the coleus combo and great idea planting the coleus to shade the niobe. That will look much prettier than the rocks I have shading her now. I will be looking for a response to your question jlp222 as well since I am new to clematis and need all the help I can get.
Aww, thanks guys! It is really pretty : )
Living in a warmer zone you can prune her by 1/2 (if you so desire) and feed some Rose or Tomato Fertilizer and she will rebound and rebloom in late Summer/early fall...Jeanne
jlp, this is gorgeous! I think this is the "big" year. Niobe is one of my favorites -- I love the color!
Niobe is putting on a beautiful show of flowers!
jlp222, if only mine would flower like that....I have some Bloom Booster fertilizer from Miracle Gro...I'll just give it a little haircut, a little food and some words of encouragement. I have impatiens growing around it. The impatiens are getting too much sun, I think, but..well, maybe they're not getting too much, cause they are growing like crazy. I just have to water them frequently because of the sun!! Thanks for your help.
here is my best niobe. this year the bloom period had been very long and very floriferous. before it is over, i will cut the plant to reduce it to a third of it's size, remove all blooms and buds(if any are left) and fertilize the plant with a balanced formula. it will bloom agin in the late summer, but the blooms will be a little smaller.
there are actually two original plants in this display.
NIOBE!!..That is GORGEOUS..you have some of the most beautiful Clematis!!..How old is your Niobe?...Jeanne
Wow, that is really pretty.
thanks for the niobe appreciation. mother nature gets all the credit around here!
this niobe planting, which is actually 2 plants is in 4th season. it was a pretty good root which i purchased locally.
the blooms really have lasted well this season. as soon as it starts to wane i will whack it back rather than look at the
downslide. it will bloom again, but not as huge.
i took a fresh tie dye photo this morning which i am attaching, for those of you that like this clematis. it is growing on me, the first year it was kind of "ok" it is going to make it, but this year i like it more and more.
Niobe, that's such a beautiful Niobe vine -- so full, and the blossoms are perfect! Tie Dye is also beautiful. Your gardens must be georgeous. The Alberta Spruce and boxwoods in the background look so healthy! I know what you mean about Mother Nature. Our gardens are forever at her mercy -- she runs the show!

"Tie-Dye" is one of my favs and yours is fantastic...Jeanne
I planted a Tye Dye this spring and it disappeared. :~(((( So did Ramona. They just disappeared.
Debbie
for what it is worth. i usually have a lot of trouble and die back/wilt with ramona. i learned if i touch the vines at all to try and train them, i get wilt. so i leave hands off ramona, even if the blooms are onthe wrong sideof the trellis. my best ramona is blooming to the rear of a huge trellis this year, but no wilt!
did yours come up and all this spring and then wilt back, or just not come up at all?
tie dye has been steady for me, no issues in year 2. will try and keep it extra warm this winter based on your experience.
Debbie..I hope you pruned them even with the soil line...continue watering with a Liquid feed and they should re-emerge...Jeanne
Both my "Ramona's" have never wilted and I am always tying them up and touching them...Jeanne
niobe, I just planted them this spring. They had some top growth, I planted them, then they promptly disappeared.
Jeanne, there's nothing to cut back on either one. They are both well watered with waaayyyy too much rain this year.
Baja..then let's hope they re-emerge again later this year or at least next Spring..Clematis are known to do that...take a year or two off and surprise ya...Jeanne
Hey guys, since I already had this thread open, I figured I would post here.
When should my babies start coming up in 8b? It seems like they had already started moving by this time last year.
