Just had a squirrel on my dining room window!

Sugar Land, TX

I could hear something loud on the window, and there was a squirrel right in the middle of the window! He let me get right up to him. Then, I got some pecans, and went out to bring the pecans, and, again, he let me get very close to him. He ran off before he took the pecans, but I'm sure he'll be back.

It was so much fun to get that close, especially considering I tend to think of them as rats with bushy tails. :)

They are neat to watch and unlike a rodent they have cute mannerisms.

We have raised the babies that were orphaned or injured. Even when they don't have a fear of man, they will still bite a plug out of you. I will say please be careful. Their bite is wicked.

We have had friends that fed them. When they weren't there to feed them, the little tree rats tore into the house and were pretty destructive. I would say put the food out in the yard away from the house and keep your distance. Cute but best watched from inside or afar, sorry.

You want some squirrels? I'll send you some. They're eating my flowers, my tomatoes and digging up my herbs as fast as I can replant them. Pleeease don't tell me about all the sprays, screens to put in the pots and cayenne pepper, etc. Listen to Pod ... they are very destructive. I do, of course, live surrounded by woods with * many many of them. Sorry, but I'm very discouraged. :-(

Hey ~ IO1 ~ you do need that cat! LOL

Sugar Land, TX

I know. The slugs have been eating my stuff, but I think the squirrels have developed a taste for my sweet basil. :(

Jo

My dad could feel squirrels out of his hand.

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

Is that what is dining on your basil? Grrrrr! Too bad the little buggers don't eat slugs!

Good luck with your basil. Sure can't do without that in the garden, can we. LOL :)

Oh, and thanks Pod, but I'm not sure my dog would care for the cat. grin

Sugar Land, TX

If squirrels ate slugs, they would be very FAT around here! LOL

The hunter and his dog as they are patrolling for squirrells. The damage we have endured from the little darlin's far outweighs any kind of cute. They are rats, pure and simple. My neighbor had to have the facsia replaced as they had eaten through all the way around the house. I plant, they dig up and eat. No love lost here.

BTW. That is an air rifle. Really only stuns them and we hope they will remember and not come back.

Yep, that's the only deterrent that works around here, too. :)

LouC ~ what a cute little "squirrel" dog.

I was stretched out on the porch dozing this afternoon and Podster went running across the porch. I woke startled thinking we had company when it was just a squirrel at the bird feeder. He is a herding dog and tries to herd anything, squirrels, cats, other dogs... LOL

Looks like a Brittany puppy. Is it?

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

Four month old, Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. My sister is breeding them so I got a deal. He is really lanky now but they are so pretty when they fill out. We named him "Chester". Proper English gentleman's name. hahaha

Does he write letters like Lord Chesterfield or bark with an english accent? Couldn't resist that, wakeful night last night.

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

hahahaha. Love it. Don't know yet. Still just babbling like baby.

Lou, I bought an air rifle too, been in the box for almost 2 years, I can't bring myself to use it.I'm thinking maybe a slingshot........

They can be quite good gardeners LOL. Here's a sunflower my little orphan planted for me before her release. Darn squirrel's flowers are blooming before mine!

Here's a picture of the ones they ate in less than a week at my house. :-(

They are such contortionists...they hang upside down, grasping the crossbar with their hind feet, to reach the sunflower seed feeder I have out for the cardinals. Here the possums do more damage to the garden crops than do the squirrels.

Yes, each gardener has their own pest. LOL Some people have deer or other problems. Guess it depends on what part of the region you live in. :-)

My brother's garden in southern Oklahoma sometimes has uprooted plants when the armadillos are searching for grubs.

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

At least here it seems when the armadillos till, they only eat bugs and don't eat the plants. I know some find them aggravating but I don't mind them.

Grapevine, TX(Zone 8a)

I just came in from watching a male peacock sitting on the roof of my house. And while we were doing that, an owl flew overhead. And a few nights ago I ran across a possum in the front yard (it really is quite fascinating to look at them when they are "playing possum"). Quite a week for nature!

Joey in Conroe, TX(Zone 8b)

You know it's weird, I have been seeing an unusual numbers of coyotes lately. We live near a state forest and they are widening the road that runs by it so it has everything stirred up lately. I'm seeing the coyotes in daylight. Poor things are so confused!

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

Be very careful when the coyote is on the prowl in daylight. If you have small animals, cats, dogs keep a close watch. I live in an area that is still under development and the coyotes are a major problem. The animal control is especially concerned when we have daylight sightings.

Yeah, I've tried to tell my neighbors that, but they still let their little lap dogs roam. The lady down the street has a cat colony that has run amok and is not particularly healthy, so as sad as it is a little population control may not be a bad thing. Right down the road a ways is a new neighborhood of 1/2 million and up homes, and on the street signs there are daily postings of missing little dogs. Makes me sad to think about it. Also makes me sad that they will be after the coyotes soon.
I have an 8 foot fence for my girls, tender little darlings that they are... I have one 65 lb American Pit Bull Terrier and my "little" girl is 50lbs. They are both supreme wimps, but not really bite sized LOL

Guess we are all going to have to get a donkey or llama. They take care of the coyotes. That's why they are so often seen in the pasture with other farm animals.

Grapevine, TX(Zone 8a)

It came back today, and has been living in my courtyard all day!

Does anyone know how cold tolerant these birds are? Are they going to be able to survive a North Texas winter?

to dfwdennis, poor thing must be lost. What a conversation starter for drinks on the patio!
I live on the golf course in an area surrounded by woods. I have squirrels galore and routinely see possums crossing my patio at night. I also see raccoons and the other nite my Min Pin had a copperhead cornered. We also have a beautiful hawk that lives on the course and it is wonderful to see him swooping back and forth above the fairway or sitting on the frame of my backyard swing.

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

Might notify animal control. There is no doubt someone is mourning the loss of this beautiful bird. Most cities they are outlawed like roosters because of the noise they make. Has a terrible sqawk. somebody is hoping he will turn up.

DfwDennis ~ I think they are fairly cold tolerant. Over on the MidSouth Gardening forum, Picabo had one (Regis) for many years and she is from Nashville, TN. You might pop over there and post a thread asking peacock questions. Another DGr there has recently gotten one also from LA. Has yours made their squawking noise yet?

Bobyrd ~ conversation starter for drinks? I would think I had enough when I saw that guy ~ LOL

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

hahahaha
Me too, Pod.

Grapevine, TX(Zone 8a)

My neighbor called animal control, and they said that someone had released a number of peacocks a few months back. They are just going to let them naturalize. It stayed in our courtyard all day yesterday, but I haven't seen it yet today. Looks like I have a new neighbor!

LouC, you are right about the noise. He didn't do it often, but when he decided to vocalize then you couldn't ignore it! :)

Peacocks are supposed to call: help, help, help.
