Beautiful baskets!!!! Unfortunately, they rot here with our humidity and mold. Beautiful work!!!!!

Oh I am so dissappointed. I am amazed that the humidity is bad for them. I live in Oregon where the humidity and mold is very high but I never have had any problems with mold on my baskets or rotting. Actually, the moisture helps to preserve them from drying out too much.

contact me via dmail maybe we can make a deal. humidity here during the spring and summer can and does reach anywhere from 85-100% daily and stays like that for months . I totally wouldn't worry about the baskets molding or rotting here, anyway who said I had too use them outside and besides about 99% of the trees here are pine!

Ohhhh those are lovely!! I wish that I had an environment that allowed me to grow hoyas as well as Dmichael, but I only have one of each plant. If you are interested in cuttings, you can contact me, but your baskets are worth a plant in trade!! You will not be disappointed if you trade with David.

Gourdbeader, I have seen pictures of your gourds on another forum, and your work is absolutely amazing!! Have you finished your Native American gourd? The texture on the buffalo head was so intricate that it looked real!! Anyone who trades with you will be getting a wonderful piece of artwork - I would say at leas gallery or museum quality.

Good luck,
Sara

Alohahoya, I think that you were speaking of having the baskets outside and these type of baskets are mainly used inside. That may have been the misconception that they would rot and mold.
I lived in Kona for many years and yes I know what the humidity can do to things. Inside however is a different story. That is unless you were living in a coffee shack. Just kidding. I remember that alot of people lived in coffee shacks when I was living there. Some were very nice and very open to the elements. Great for some of the younger folks that were able to deal with the elements. Some had wonderful veiws of the ocean and were very primitive in some respects. We use to live off of Alii Dr by the Kona Lagoon hotel. It was just up from Magic sands beach. Gosh, that was so many years ago. Seems like a lifetime has past since I was there. I lost my DH when we lived there and I tried to raise my daughters but it was just to much for me and 3 little girls to do on my own. I always wanted to go back as I threw his ashes into his beloved ocean as I knew thats what he would have wanted. He was a young and ambitious surfer and lived life to the fullest. I miss him.
Sorry, just got wrapped up in the memories.

Hi Jan... In fact, I do have a Pondarosa Pine Needle basket from the Copper Canyon in Mexico and it is fine...but my wonderful collection of baskets from all over the south pacific are rotting!!! No...don't life in a coffee shack, but a big house with lots of porches and windows open and 160" of rain a year. I often spray organic material with cheap hair spray...they seem to last longer!!!

Your baskets ARE beautiful!!! Sad you have such bittersweet memories of Kona... You must come back!!! (we live on the E. side of the Big Island)
