Dutch Iris

Greenwood, IN(Zone 5b)

Mine are getting ready to pop! I thought about posting these in the Iris forum, but afterall, Dutch Iris are bulbs and not rhizomes! They are behind the Sir Winston Churchill daffs and will look spectacular with them.

OMG, you are going to have quite a show! i interplanted mine with daffs, now i think i should have "clumped" them up together more. here is a NOID that was from a mixed bag, i think it is too cute!

Thanks tabasco and aggie. Nice picture of yours, Tracie. I only have one flower starting to open today. I planted three varieties.

Greenwood, IN(Zone 5b)

They are very prolific, aren't they? And so easy to plant large numbers of them. I am surprised they're not more popular. They effectively bridge daffs/tulips on the one hand and lilies on the other.

i planted a bunch of mixed, they are the ones starting to bloom now. i also planted about 3 or 4 named varieties, none of them have shown any signs of blooms yet. i did plant them much later than the mixed varieties.

aggie, mine have always come back every year. They've been a good perennial choice for me in our climate.

Lufkin, TX(Zone 8b)

i was wondering. can i cut back the foliage a little after they bloom? i did not expect the foliage to be quite so tall and wild! between the daff foliage and the iris foliage, cant even see my daylilies! i just wanted to trim the daff and iris foliage down some, not cut it all the way to the ground. what do you think? you can kinda see my problem with this pic. there are at least 20 daylililes, some snaps, lilies, all in this bed, but the foliage is covering most of them.

Tracie,

If it's not browned I would leave it. That helps promote good return. One of the negatives of beautiful spring flowers is the unslightly foliage you have to look at for weeks after bloom. Just one of those tradeoffs.

Lufkin, TX(Zone 8b)

i dont mind foliage, just didnt expect it to be so tall! i planted my daylilies with the shortest in front to the tallest in back (duh!) and i am quite sure that i will not be able to even see the ones in the middle. wouldnt it still be feeding the plant if i just gave them a little trim? lol

LOL if you want to trim a few inches off it would probably be OK. I avoid it personally but then I am extra anal about that stuff - but if you leave most of the foliage stands to reason you should be alright.

Mine started opening en masse today!!
