Happy Weekend everyone..while the cat is away this mouse has played!!..I know I am always talking about alternate ways to create obelisk...something for clematis to climb on..other than Rebar..I like to use that wire fencing that I buy at Lowe's..You can get a big roll for 35-50 bucks...Here is what it looks like for those that have no idea what I am talking about!!..Jeanne

It comes in 4ft height but you can cut it long ways to get your desired length..I dug a hole and cut the bottom out of a pot and sunk the pot into the hole and Planted clematis "Dr. Ruppel" and "The P*r*e*s*i*d*e*n*t"..then I planted the perimeter with red Begonias...

I have a shepards hook in the center with a hanging basket of Bouganvilla (Even the birdies need something purty to look at while dining at the Birdie station

OOO,,, I just got home from gathering stuff**** this morn, and guess what?. My last stop was at Lowe's to get more compost and they had 4" pots of clematis for 5.98. I got 'Dr. Rupple',
'H.F. Young', 'Asao', 'Fireworks', & 'Carnaby' .
They are blooming !!!! Woo, I still have the order coming from Koi== is this how you overdo it?
QUESTION-- should I plant these in the ground, repot in larger pots or what?

Jana..usually I tell most newbies to pot up those clematis you got from Lowe's in those 2 1/2 inch pots from Roseville in one gallon pots..BUT, I DON'T...I planted mine right into the ground with some bonemeal..Because I am very anal about keeping them moist..I stick my finger daily in the soil to check for moisture and if starting to dry..I water them..I've done that for 4 years from the ones I bought at Lowe's and haven't lost a one..remember to plant both "Asao" and "Carnaby" in morning sun and afternoon shade as they both really fade in our part of the world...half a day sun either way is ok..just make sure they will be in a spot that will stay moist...Jeanne

Thanks Jeanne, I knew you would help me !!! Now gotto go get started trying to figure where to put all these beauties. I went to a little"pot" place this morning and got 3 great pots for some
caudiciform. I"ve never grown them before so I gotta read lots before planting. They are so ready to plant,, they are growing a stem just sitting on my patio table! One is called "elephant Foot" and one is "baseball " and one is "apple ? I forgot.
O,, I got a pot for my little pond to make a waterfall. Hubby really is happy I am finding so much stuff for him to help with, hahaha..
Thanks again,
jana

Well, Jeanne I love your weekend project. I too made the trip to Lowe's yesterday for rose fertilizer and there was the clematis display. Came home with 2 more. Snow Queen and Niobe. Than I woke up this morning and there were the last 6 from Koi that had wintered over on my deck in 1 gallon pots. Well I got everyone planted out today except Niobe. Caroline & Fujimusume just arrived last week from Chalkhill. I plan to pot them up in 1 gallon pots and grow them out some more. I still have Hoshi no Flamenco coming some time this month and about 8 more from my yahoo co-op. When will the madness end. I will say the ones I potted up last fall and planted out this spring all had large root systems. Glad you told me to do this Jeanne. Well I'd better go back and look at your weekend project. I think I need more trellis's.

You HAVE been very naughty and VERY busy too! Your garden is so full of color and it is just the beginning of Spring. Can't wait to see all your Clematis in full bloom!

Jeanne, how do you have the wire fencing you made into an obelisk stuck in the ground or anchored down?

Love your H. F. Young!!

Who me??? I've been relatively good. Bought a few Clematis, cleaning up my Spring garden, cutting back Clematis vines, fertilizing, mulching & spraying. Probably will start planting this weekend. I'm doing it slow & easy.

Baja..I use wire clippers and cut the horizontal ones off leaving a long prong that goes into the soil and have wire staples that I hammer down ontop of the wire to hold them down...Shirley is a "good" naughty like me..LOL..Shirl..can't wait to see your clems this year...I am seriously thinking about saying clematis leap their 4th year..for most of mine are now 4 and 5 years old and are outgrowing height wise moreso by leaps and bounds than last year!!...Jeanne
