I did my first local nursery shopping yesterday. Spring has sprung and there I was at Rare Find nursery. I think I picked up a great bargain, not that I was there to get a Magnolia, but somehow it ended up in my car. I had picked out a few Rhodies and had inadvertantly wandered into the Magnolia greenhouse. There in front of me stood the most BEAUTIFUL blooms of a Magnolia. I had to run out and flag down other half to show him these blooms. Even he was awestruck at the sight in front of him. So I said, let's see how much I have spent already and if this tree is less than $125 I'm going to get it. Well it was $75. I got it. I got home and googled it and every place that offered it for sale had it listed at $150 and up. And it was not a little shrimp. It's about 6 foot tall. And the blooms were not as big as my hand, EACH petal were almost the size of my hand. What a gorgeous tree this will be (if i don't kill it)
A good deal??
Sounds like a great deal! Just got my first order from them - nice sized pieris! Please post a pic of the magnolia.
How exciting! Sounds like a great deal! I love the magnolias! My son has a very old one in his yard at his new house and I can't wait to see it in bloom.
Victor I saw the pieris lined up at the checkout barn. I'm going back in a couple of days to get one or two. Valentine Valley really caught my attention. WC2, it had soft pink and white blooms. Its called Felicity.
Donnie, these Magnolias are going to eat a hole in the wallet!
I got Dorothy Wycoff.
I think they'll be worth it!! Enjoy.........life's too short.....guilt is too expensive!!! LOL
Sounds like a Visa or MasterCard commercial!
Now that you mention it.......I guess it does......it's my new mantra!!
But most plants - especially trees and shrubs - will increase in value over time and pay dividends. Perennials divide to produce more of themselves. Annuals will re-seed to make more.
It'd be nice if my visa did as the plants do.
Well I love Magnolias and I think you got a heck of deal. I'm not going to go look.....cause then you'll be telling me I got a heck of a deal too! I want a yellow one and a peachy/pink one that is hardy for z4-5.....there goes a $100 or more.
Sounds good to me too. I have such a long list of plants I "need" it is really ridiculous, but doesn't stop me from adding another one. :)
Pixie and ngam, I think you both should check out their online catalogue :~)
A pieris is another one I saw at the nursery today, very pretty.
I love them.
Boy am I glad to have stumbled on this forum. I am going down to RareFind in 1 1/2 weeks to look for Magnolias. I just hope there are some left! Thanks for the positive feedback.
Wish I had room for one or two myself.
Ok...it's all Venu's fault......
I now own :

Beautiful choices, Pixie.
Yes very nice. Fairweather has many magnolias as well.
Thanks Pirl and Victor I thought they complimented each other nicely.

Those are very pretty. Oh no more things on the list. Already have a long list of goodies for next year. I just love it. :)
I finally get to be the enabler instead of the enabled. Such a nice feeling. Love your choices Pixie! I got Coral Lake last year at Fairweather.
oooh, lucky you, Celeste! Those are just gorgeous! I especially like that flamingo color! I might have to ask for one of those for a birthday!
njjpl, have you been to rarefind before? Such an awesome staff of people besides the great variety of plants!!
I am hoping to get there this coming week. I'm looking for a good size Sweetbay Magnolia, called 'Jim Wilson' and the folks at Rare Find are searching for one for me. Hope they can find one.
I like Sweetbay and sieboldii since they bloom later.
I almost bought sieboldii for that very reason....I may next year.
It's beautiful. I lost one but will probably get another one day. There is a beautiful 'regular' one around the corner from me and almost every year we get a frost right after it opens so it ends up in bloom only one or two days!
I got clematis sieboldi last fall and it is the only clematis that I lost. Does sieboldi have some Latin meaning such as only grow in warm climates?
Could be. I've lost it three times so far.
Lol Pirl, there are those that say three times lost is the sign of a true gardener!
Yes, I've heard that one. Somehow I don't think that particular clematis likes me.
Does anyone know what "sieboldii" means? Google doesn't have a definition. I have a Primula sieboldii 'Pink Snowflake'.
It is from the name of the person who first introduced or discovered the plant. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philipp_Franz_von_Siebold Scroll down, there is a list of plants he is credited with his name in them.
Thanks, Pat! Who knew you were such a wealth of knowledge!
Guess it doesn't like me either. Maybe Mr. Sieboldi was from Florida.
My sedum sieboldii have done very well. The magnolia died. Never tried clematis.
My sedum sieboldii does very well, too.
