I have tried growing this tree from seeds on several different ocassions, with NO luck! I would love to obtain some young seedlings or small starter trees for trade or postage costs! D-mail me!
Thanks! ~Becky~
Looking for a few Redbud tree starter plants
I have one in NY zone 5 what do I look for to see if I have any seedlings?
Hi Mittsy! Of course you would be one of the folks to look for a plant for me! You are just too sweet! My other plants are doing well. Thank you and please thank your daughter for me!
I believe this is what a Redbud sapling looks like, but not totally sure since they aren't that common in south Florida:

Yes that is a redbud, I usually have several come up in the pasture, It is a slow spring here so no leaves yet. I can recognize the small trees but should wait to see if they survived the winter, before making any promises.
They have a very long taproot and trying to transplant anything over 1 or 2 years is almost impossible. I have found the root to be just about as long as the top.
Thanks GardenGus!
I am just looking for small new seedlings that are just popping out of their seeds. I think they would definitely survive better than an older sapling dug up and transplanted. A seedling with maybe 2-3 sets of new leaves. I know they are probably growing wild on the ground and just get mowed over or pulled out by folks. I would like to obtain 2-3 of these seedlings (just in case they don't all make it).
They are in bloom everywhere here. I'll scout the area and see if I can find you a few seedlings too.
3gardeners - That would be awesome!
I will probably be interested in as many as I can find. So I appreciate y'all looking for me! Thank you!
beckygardener;
Hello...I've found that they don't transplant very well. I've dug some of the tiniest babies out of my yard and put them into pots. Out of a hundred or so from 2 years ago (I lost track, my husband thought I was crazy), only a handful survived and continued to grow.
I planted one in my front yard and I think the neighbors stepped on it when they got in and out of their vehicle. I still have a couple of beautiful ones in a pot. (Make it a tall pot...that tap root is very long) and I gave the rest away.
Hope yours do very well for you!

I have a number of small one that I potted up last year that hae leafed out. I could send several if you would like. I think they are the Eastern Redbud.

Oh Cool, DD! I'd love 2 of them, since they are potted instead of being dug up so they more likely to transplant! Would it be possible for you to take a photo of the leaves and post here to make sure?
My camera is not working at this time so sorry no photos. I am sure that these are the native Eastern redbud. Heart shaped leaves, purple blooms prior to leaves coming out. These are small, about 18" to 2 '. They have been potted for over a year. May have a half dozen. They are rather fast growers here. I am betting that they will need to be planted out soon as bet they are root bound in the pots.
I see you are in Florida and I love interesting tropical. Do you have any that you could trade ?
Thanks
DD
Ditto on the transplant problems. We tried growing them in class.... I'd say 75% failed. LOL
Not that I want to scare you or deter you by any means.. Just saying good luck!
I think the key is getting them when small. I dug several and potted them up. Took them to my son in Miss. last October. He said all have made it. Still have several small ones potted and leafed out.
Now Sassafras is another very difficult tree to get going. I have tried and failed often with this one. I do have a 2 foot one potted and doing well. Will trade it too.
Let me know if interested.

Hi:
I have a boat load of seedling in a flat that planted seed into. I have transplanted a dozen or so and the have done quite well. The trick with rb seedlings is to let them put on a few extra leaves and be careful with the roots. Please let me know if want any. I will look over your have list. Here is a pic of the flat and I will follow with a potted plant pic.
