This seems like quite a "close knit" group/Forum, but I'm going to post here again anyway, lol! I never come home empty-handed and today was no exception. I couldn't resist this new gesneriad, which I'm thinking may be Streptocarpus saxorum or at least a cultivar of it. Can someone please take a look and ID it for me? Did I pay too much for it at $3.00? It is in a 10" hanging pot.
Also, I'm still looking for any seeds whatsoever to get my gesneriad collection off the ground, or rather in the ground! I'd love to make a trade, but unfortunately I'm lacking anything in the Gesneriaceae Family, at the moment at least. I hope to have some very choice seeds from Drymonia macrantha soon, but naturally would like something equivalent in a trade. In the near future I also hope to have some choice seeds from several other gesneriad species, especially columneas!
Thanks a lot! This first pic is of the whole plant.
Please help with ID and trade seeds!
That first plant is Streptocarpella Concord Blue... Lovely plant! And ... Wow! $3.00 for a plant that size? What a deal!

$3.00????!!!! Wow- lucky you!! Nice steal!
Thanks a lot plantladylin! Now I don't feel so guilty buying another plant I don't need, lol! I'm moving in 3 weeks so it's one more thing to throw in the truck. For that price, you can't go wrong!
That is gorgeous, vanillaman! $3 is a fabulous price and I probably would have been weak and gotten more than one. LOL
what a deal, what a beauty.
mrsbonnie

Thanks so much mrsbonnie. I thought Ottawa was the capital of Canada, lol! Maybe it moved to Illinois and I didn't hear about it!
Just a little note to add. I found a ripe seed pod and several more that are in the process of ripening so I'll add this to my Have list soon.
Stunning!
LOL, my local nursery would charge $15-20 for a lovely like that in a 10" basket! Great deal!
This is certainly a friendly group, but I hope nobody has given you the impression that it's a clique where new posters are unwelcome... you can jump right into any thread here! I love your enthusiasm. :-)
Lin, you're usually spot on with IDs, but I'm wondering a little... because if that's a 10 inch pot, the leaves and blooms look a lot bigger than my Streptocarpella 'Concord Blue'... very similar, but I'm just wondering about the scale. The leaves on mine are only 1/4 inch wide, and the biggest leaf I could find just now measured 5/8 inches long.
Let me see if I've got a photo... well, phoo, I could've sworn there was one somewhere. LOL
Thanks critterologist! I'm always a little intimidated when I start posting at a new Forum. I find some are quite "cliquish" actually so I know it takes time to be accepted.
The mature leaves on my plant are 1.5 to 2" long and at least 1" wide. It looks small compared to say a regular a.v., but definitely doesn't look like a "miniature", which yours sounds like critt...! I'll do some Googling to read some specific descriptions of leaf sizes etc. Are you thinking maybe mine is the species saxorum rather than a cultivar?
Vanillaman: Yes, feel free to join this group! Everyone is Welcome here! We all love to chat and show photo's of our plants ... the more the merrier!
I apologize if I gave the wrong ID on your plant, which I could very well have misidentified that one. Here's another Streptocarpella in Plant Files: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/2114.html
I think your plant may very well be the saxorum.
"The more the merrier", lol! Thanks a lot plantladylin, no problem. The species saxorum does seem to be a larger plant overall, so I think that's what I have. No wonder it was so cheap, although I'm very pleased with it. A couple of pieces have already broken off on the way home, so I'll start up some small pots with them. At my new house I think I'll plant some in the ground among the rocks and let it spread! I hope the butterflies and hummingbirds like it!
I think your new garden will be lovely with these plants. Even if they don't attract butterflies and hummingbirds, they are still pretty for you to look at! I hope once you are settled in your new home you will share photo's of your garden with us!
I think you just got a great deal... I don't think the price had anything to do with the ID... at least around here, it would make no difference. I've never seen that one locally! :-)
Great, I'm feeling better all the time about my "find" lol! I want to plant gesneriads all over the place there because it is such an ideal place for them. Here are a few plants that are already there growing at the new house, which I'm very pleased about acquiring for free, lol! The first is a Thai Banana or Musa coccinea.
I think I'm having 'location-envy'! I wouls absolutely love to look out across a jungle! And I would be willing to bet you figure out a way to get across that river to roam!
Thanks for posting the pics!
"location envy" -- no kidding!
Are you just new to this house, or are you new to Costa Rica? (My apologies if you've already explained how you got to where you are now... memory is like a sieve this weekend!)
Wow! My friends son Loves Costa Rica, he is a big Surfer and has been there many times. He always told us how beautiful it is .... your photo's have now shown me! Don't stop posting pictures .... we love them!
I love that cobblestone path and Wow ... that view down the road is lovely! Now ... about the Jungle across the river - Sure looks beautiful but what kinds of "critters" do you find in that jungle? LOL. I would love looking across the river towards the jungle but I'm a big chicken when it comes to snakes and creepy crawlies. ^_^
just beautiful.keep them comeing.lol
mrsbonnie
3 dollars is a great deal, ive got a white one, called white butterfly
Welcome Vanillaman..hope to see you posting often here..Love your pics. You live in Quite the Beautiful Area. What a Great Buy on that Gorgeous Basket : )
Thanks everybody! I'd love the white one, and a pink one too lol! I just got back online after a freak hailstorm this afternoon that knocked out the power for 7 hrs. It looked like Canada for a while because the hail stayed on the ground, so everything was white!
When I find more gesneriads, I'll post pics, and ofcourse come here when I need help and advice!
sent your seed out today, hope you get it quick.vanillaman
mrsbonnie
Thanks mrsbonnie, I can't wait! Usually takes about a week from the U.S. or Canada.
