Why are my daffodils not blooming?

Redondo Beach, CA

Some of them came up and then the buds turned brown and shrivelled up. Some of them came up and bloomed just fine. They're all in the same area and get the same sun, water, food. What's that all about?

I dug them up and replanted them last summer because they'd gotten very crowded, would that produce that effect? They are White Lion doubles. Any advice?

It's called "blasting" and there are several theories on it, but none have been proven. The only thing about everybody (in the American Daffodil Society) agrees on is that it happens moslty to doubles, and just because it happened this year doesn't mean it will happen next year.

The choices are: the bulbs got too hot in storage and it blasted the bud that was in them. There was not enough rainfall. It got too cold right as the bud was coming up. It got too hiot when the bud was coming up. LOL! As you can see, there is no answer. The good news is it probably won't happen next year. White Lion is a double that rarely blasts, BTW, at least compared to some of the others.

Thank you so much for the insight. I live in SoCal so I don't dig them up and store them. I dug them up to space them out and planted them the same day in the late summertime.

However, this year the weather's been crazy, it got warm in Feb for a week, then cold again, then warm again in Mar, then cold again, so that might explain what did it to them. And it sounds like there isn't much I can do to prevent it, as it did also happen last year, which was a dry winter, so there you have it.

I appreciate your help!
