I am just starting to grow veggies (literally this year), but I grew up with my dad growing a bunch of the typical veggies for around here. I remember he would cut up a potato and throw it almost anywhere in his yard and it would produce a great plant with plenty of yummy potatoes, but he never did sweet potatoes. I know they are different than your regular old russets, but wasn't sure if it was possible to grow decent sweet potatoes around here without too much work. Thanks!
Anyone grow sweet potatoes around here?
Ooooh. Good question. I LOVE sweet potatoes. Don't know why we all don't eat moreof them!!
I know, I have been hooked on them lately! They are only $0.50/lb at Country Farms near by me, but I just thought it might be kind of neat to grow myself. I looked it up, and it looks like they like warm weather and take a while to mature, but I thought who knows, maybe someone around here has had some success. :) Yummy! found a terrific recipe on the food network, sweet potato hash, with onions, bell peppers, cumin... wonderful!
Yum is right!!
I just like to say that, "Suweeeet patata hashhshshs."
You can do it here- but need an early start with warmed up soil, which is do-able in a raised bed. You'll also need to protect them & give them lots of warmth, so cover with reemay. they are not as hardy as regular potatoes - can't take the cold, and they're a long-season crop.
Thanks a bunch to both of you... that's good info, similar to what I was thinking... its too late and too many things on my plate for this year to try it, especially when they are 2lbs for a $1 a few blocks away, but I definitely would like to try it in the future, so hopefully I can get a jump on it next year. :) Thanks again!
Stacy
