At first blush it might seem silly to try growing food in the shadow of buildings. Yet, a tradition of vegetable gardening that never lost favor in rural communities is trickling back into cities. Some urbanites, like Kevin Bayuk, who farms his backyard in the Haight, want to take the locavore movement a step further and turn vacant urban spaces into food-producing gardens. On a larger scale, regional planners are beginning to think about local food sustainability.
