Mexico to Allow GM Corn
March 25, 2008
Mexico has completed the development of regulations that will clear the way for planting experimental crops of genetically modified corn, says a Reuters news story on Planet Ark. The Mexican Congress passed a law in 2004 to allow the plantings, subject to rules that have just been developed. Mexico is the birthplace of corn, and some farmers fear contamination of Mexico's native corn crops with the genetically modified varieties. To address this concern, the new rules will not allow GM corn to be planted in some areas of the country that have been identified as centers of origin for unique corn strains.
