How many of you are itching to get out and start doing something, anything in the garden. Other than look and dream is there really anything that we can do. Ontario zone 5. Any pruning? Maybe unwrap the burlap nomes?
thank
Spring is in the air
Now that the snow is off the flowerbeds that face south (there's still a foot of snow in the shade), I can see all the dead stalks that I need remove from the perennials before new growth appears. Also, there are those pesky little weeds that green-up while still under the snow so that they can get a head start. I really ought to start weeding and tidying, but the ground is pretty squelchy right now, so I'm hesitant to walk on the flowerbeds. Where the deer have walked across, it looks like moon craters.
Itching here for sure! I'm going to be starting some direct sowing of seeds to outdoor pots and containers this weekend - poppies and stuff that likes cooler weather for germination. Each weekend from now on I'll be adding more and more to that list until my final sowings of heat loving plants near the end of May/first week of June.
LOL I'm checking my winter sowing containers almost obsessively every day now. So far only one thing is sprouting - the Malva sylvestris ssp. mauritiana (Bibor Felho) - but on some of the others I can see the root radicles starting to peak out of the seeds.
Other items on my to do list for this weekend are to rake the remaining leaves out of the gardens, prune my rose bushes, prune my variegated willows, and if I still have time and the inclination I'll pull up the annuals that I left standing for the birds to have the seeds over the winter. We'll see how much of that list actually gets done versus how much time I just spend prowling the gardens for signs of life :-)
Oh I hear you ladanamy!!! I have been having an urge to rent a giant blow torch to melt all the snow that is still covering my property. I'm itching to set up my new greenhouse that has been waiting patiently in 10 big boxes in my rec room...lol
Until that day comes I keep busy with slowly taking over my kitchen with flats of seedlings, grow lights and various other contraptions to get a head start on growing annuals and veggies.
I can`t even walk around my property yet, because the snow is still too high in many places, so no pruning for me :(
Guess all we can do is wait and dream for the day to arrive when we can do what we like best - GARDENING
Thea :)
the snow has melted around the greenhouse, but the ground is sopping wet and too soft to walk on yet....
everything else in still in 'planning' stage.... have tons of seeds to start.... will have to wait until next weekend.....
all the other beds are still snow covered, but the weekend weather is forcast to be warm.... so... it should be cleared by early next week.
patience rabbit!
I did see 2 robins on the front lawn on Wednesday this week! the redwinged blackbirds are singing...
Oh man, I can't WAIT! Every morning I look at the backyard to see what's appeared from under the snow. Yesterday it was the lounge chair that I needed to get rid of last summer. I can now see the top of my composter and faint outlines of the pile of rocks that I never got around to moving. Beside the rocks there is a pile of corn stalks from Halloween that need to get relocated. Right now everything still looks kind of pretty with a covering of snow though underneath it's another story.
I'm doing alot of direct seeding this weekend. The ground is soft in enough in the sunny beds.
Oh gosh I still have snow...it is melting but still have it!!!! I am hoping after the next few days it will mostly be gone but then I will have to contend with the soggy ground. I will try cleaning up as much as I can until things are more workable!
Hi:
It's great reading all your posts. I saw my first Robin yesterday, so I now have to get into the gardens. Crocus and tulips are popping up all around the gardens, the south facing ones of course, the north are still very white, but this weekend should take care of most of the snow.
The willows and roses are going to get some attention. I also have pampas grass that is my salvation all winter, but it's time for a hair cut. Maybe not this weekend, but soon.
