Did some work tonight

Pittsburgh, PA(Zone 6a)

Well fellow ponders I did some work tonight. My water was turning green, my water lilies weren't looking good, and I've already had one fish go to "fishy heaven". :( I repotted my lilies because they were "stinky". Pitched some plants,,okay lots of plants. Did a little mini water change, added dechorinator stuff and some stuff to supposedly clear the water. Oh, and also cleaned the filters. I sure hope that works.

Gee Tks but I think I'll pass. I got many sketter bites in the process. (itch, itch) Got up this am,,,still cloudy. Wish I knew what else to do. I have never "vacuumed" the bottom. Quite frankly haven't a clue how other than using a hose. Guess maybe I better do some searching for that. I love ponding but right now it's extremely frustrating to be great all summer and now yucky.

Hi Sled,

It's me again... Lowe's sells a water hose vacuum for about 30.00 bucks...after you drain out the water, you vacuum the bottom and fill the pond at the same time...

It's a cool tool but my pond is sooo big I have to tippy toe in the pond when I vacuum and get nibbled by the fish...

Jaws weighs about 3 1/2 pounds and sucks real hard...but it really doesn't hurt...

I just get creepy thinking it could be a snake...never seen one in the pond but it makes you wonder...

BTW, do you do ph testing on your pond weekly?

Cheers!

Hey Prissy, Went away for the weekend and the water got worse. I wanna talk to hubby and see if he'll do the vacuum thing with our shop vac. Oh I just thought of something..hope he don't suck up the fish!! I did a check on the ph before I left. AOK. We are extremely frustrated. Anyone got a shovel??

first off sledder get yourself a good net and net the bottom a few times, it will dirty and smelly, but you can remove a good deal of debris from the bottom, it may be that something has drowned in the pond and that is what is causing you problems, it might just be an overload of of decaying matter, so get out as much as you can then leave it for a week and see what happens.

I appreciate the answer. When we did the little water change last evening we pumped the water from the bottom out trying to get out the "yucky" water. I'll do the net thing tonight. Some of the water hyathins don't look too good either. You think I should ditch some of them? At one time I had probably 2/3 of the pond covered. But that's when the lilies were doing good. Not now! I'm down to about 3 leaves per lily. I just can't imagine what could have gone wrong so quick since everything was great for 4 months or more.

I have read about this brown water problem some where, havent seen or heard of it before so put at the back of my mind, i will hunt through my books and find it for you.

Hi Sledder - was wondering if the accu-clear worked. Doesn't sound like it????? AJC does the same as us. Net the bottom before you vacuum. You get a lot of stuff up. Hubby does this as well as vacuum. Too much pressure for me. I can't do it. Hate to admit I don't have that upper body strength but......Let us know how it's going - vic

Well as of this am before I left for work it hadn't done anything. On the bottle it said to mix it in a container and then distribute in the pond. I did that and it looked almost white in the bucket before I put it in the pond. Was that showing it was going to work you think? Right before I put it in I ran my netting across the bottom to see if there was anything dead in the pond. Nope..just some dead rocks :) That was a good thing. Do you think it was bad to take out the water hyathings before I put the accu-clear in? I thought about doing it again this evening. I just hate putting so much chemical in the water. Thankfully my fish seemed to handle it very well. The little guys were begging for food the whole time. It's amazing how attached we get to a lousy fish. *giggle* Thanks for the help guys. I'm a tryin!! Is it normal to get the "spring green" thing again in the late summer/early fall maybe? I'm grasping at anything I can get.

Don't use accu-clear more than directed. If you do, all the fish will die. Use only as directed. take care...vic

If this is a type alge doing this (there is brown algae as well as green) wouldn't that barley stuff help?

Pittsburgh, PA(Zone 6a)

There is brown algae?? Really? That is truly a new one. I did not know that.

could you tell me the name of the pond vacuum pump? does it have a brand name? I need one of those...

Pittsburgh, PA(Zone 6a)

Kelly333: This may sound rather bizzare but we used just a plain ole wet/dry shopvac. Worked for us. I do understand that there are actual pond vacuum. Maybe someone else can give both of us the name of them. "T" :)

(Zone 8a)

Hey Ya'll,
The vacuum I have is not really a vacuum but an attachment you put on the hose and fills the pond with water as it sucks water and collects debris thru a bag on side... Don't know the name of it!

Hope this helps!

I think what would be good is on a Pet Warehouse catalog for ponds. I just got it in the mail today. You can go to their website and order a catalog too. (free)

Has anyone tried their pumps?
