Hanging Begonias How big a pot?

Lowell, MA(Zone 6a)

Hi, I am new to Begonias. Just received an order of hanging begonias from DutchBulbs. But i dont know how big should the pot be. Also how Begonias prefer the soil when hanging. Any kind of advise or comment will be great~

Thanks a bunch!

Hey Dulci, I came to this forum looking for the answer to the same question as yours. Was wondering what you wound up doing with yours & how it's working out?

Well I went by instint and by what I researched. At the end I decided to go with a 10in hanging pot. I read they like good drainage so I got a fairly better brand of potting soil that will reatain moisture but it wont clog the roots. (According to the sales person at Lowes) LOL

I am in area 6 so I started them inside to win some time, but my new dilema is that this NE weather's been a roller coaster, and my plants are getting big. I want them ouside so bad so that they can thrive.

Did you get tubers too? I planted 3 in each 10in pot. Lets see how that goes when they grow. But I want a full look.

This is a pic I took just now...

They look great...so healthy & happy. It looks like it'll be really full. i'm gonna go with 3 per pot too. I picked up some potting mix & have some pots ready. I hope your weather straightens itself out soon, so those babies can go outside where they are gonna be huge. Keep me updated. Thanks.

Three bulbs in a 10 inch pot is what I do. Here's one from last year.

Is that a hanging basket begonia? I ordered a Roseform & they only came in 1 per pkg. Everything else came in combos of 3, so maybe thats standard. I have to agree, that is so beautiful. Did you bring those same bulbs in for the winter?

Darn, and double darn! I was so excited I have growth on my tuber without it rotting first, that I just came on here to ask how big a pot for my tuber. I guess I should have gotten 3 tubers!

Since I didn't, What can I do with one tuber? Can I plant with other things to make a mixed container planting? Coleus? Impatiens? Or maybe my Impatiens arguta?

The double (of double darn) comes from me wishing I had bought pink instead of red! That is an awesome basket, Jooles!

How common is Escargot? Is it hard to grow? It is so eyecatching...everytime I see it I want it.

Thanks for any help on my $2.99 red hanging basket tuber. LOL! Hardly worth your effort to answer.

Illoquin,LOL - how and where did you plant the bulb? Why do you think it rot? I was very nervous about planting the bulbs; now I am nervous the plantts will die before i can take them outside.

Dulci, The problem always stemmed from planting the tuber in soil or soilless mix that was too cold, and watering too much before it got roots. Now that I am a more seasoned gardener, I know better, but in the early years I would routinely rot them out.

The plant that I've killed the most in the last months is a water lily. I bought one, killed it. Got a tuber in a trade, killed it. Got one to seed, I'm in the process of killing it. Now I am developing a fear to grow water lilies. I personally blame everythiing on this weather that does not make up its mind. It's easier to blame it on other things other than my insane rush to have a tropical garden in mere May in zone 6b.
