BIRD SEED RECALL

Tiller, OR(Zone 8a)

I posted this on daily pics, but some of you might miss it there.

This message copied from Oregon Birders On Line:

FYI:

In the United States Scott's Miracle-Gro has recalled their Morning Song and
Country Pride bird feeding products. The products were treated with
pesticides and fungicides to reduce moth and fungus problems during storage,
the company says. These chemicals weren't approved by the US Environmental
Protection Agency for use in bird feed. The company's statement can be read
on their website: [HYPERLINK@www.scotts.com] . They downplay the risk, but the
fact that they have removed the products from their dealers' shelves
certainly raises red flags, not only about the products but also about the
company.

Good idea putting it on a seperate thread. Thank You!

I'd never trust anyone who uses names like 'miracle-gro' . . . sounds phoney right from the start!

I looked all around the main page for the info and finally found it by clicking on the Goldfinch on the right side that said wild bird food.

Just wanted to say that I went to a local Meijer's today and noticed that two of the brand names ( Scotts, Morning Song ) that were suppose to be pull from shelves, weren't.

Meijer's is a big food - nonfood store ( carries everything ) that has headquarters in Grand Rapids, Mich.

Marilyn

Didn't notice if there were any of the Country Pride wild bird seed there and/or if they even carry Country Pride.

The pesticide was approved for "use on some stored grains, including grains that may be turned into human food. However, the insect controls are not EPA-approved for wild bird food or wild animal food."

So maybe we should all be eating bird food!

My wife is a merchandiser for scotts-we had to pull close to twenty pallets of bird food off the shelves in the last two days----If you need seed, look for anything manufactured after 03-12-08---thats what they told us to leave on the shelves.

Resin, Miracle-gro is a reputable company with many good products. Theirs is the only potting soil I will use and it is the base for every mix I make and use for everthing, from starting seeds, cactus & succulents, bromeliads and orchids, clivia and so on. Someone goofed, and someone caught it, probably within the company. Another point is it has not been approved for use on wild bird food, but can be used on grain intended for human consumption, means simply that it has not been approved yet, and it does not mean that it will not be or is not safe. I buy all my seed mixes from a feed mill that blend their own mixes, and they are always fresh

Marlton, NJ

They do have alot of nice products. I wasn't aware they sold bird seed till now.

Franklin, MA

Scott's made a big boo boo on this one.

There may not be a bird actually named "chicken hawk". Remember the expression "like a hawk watching a chicken?" Red tailed hawks go after chickens and other birds. We have had one get to the cages and try to pull the chickens and pigeons through the wire. It is against the law to kill or harm them. The wildlife people said to build a cage around the pens; like a pen inside a pen. It would not be practical with my husband's condition and hard to handle his wheelchair. He has this for a hobby to keep from sitting around holding his hands and basically just rotting away. The wildlife people told him he could harrass the hawk by shooting at it, but be sure and not actually shoot the hawk. Just make it hot enough he would leave. So when the hawk comes around, he shoots his high powered rifles at him. Sounds like a cannon going off. The hawk will disappear for 5-6 months and then return to see if things have cooled off.

We have bee buying this wild bird seed from Tractor Supply for our pigeons and to fill the bird feeders and the birds love it. Then when we went back to the store there was no wild bird feed. The salesman said there had been a recall and acted like there was nothing to it, but poison is poison. These bids are small creatures and the poison is building up in their systems. What will be the long term effects on our pigeons. They are fairly expensive racing/homing pigeons.

Maple Heights, OH

Probably none, just because it was not approved, does not mean it is toxic, it means simply that it was not aproved for that use.
