How much would you pay for a variegated monstera?

(Kim) Philadelphi, PA(Zone 6a)

Did you get it????

Lexington, SC(Zone 8a)

My DW might string me up if I paid that much for a monstera at the moment. I have so many of the regular type crawling over the house, LOL.

Now on the other hand, I am eying this beauty. I just hear they are hard to grow and produce pups.

These are just as easy to grow as the green ones. But they do like higher temps and higher humidity. I paid $125 for my first one,now i have about 6 of them. When i get close to them all i hear is FEED ME FEED ME!!!!! AE-AE bananas I've bought about 6 and had about 6-8 pups over the years and have KILLER all of them. I just love them but can'nt keep them alive??????? Jerry

So were you saying you did or did not have trouble with the Ae Ae banana?

Dallas, TX

Kimarj, Yes that is a green monstera. I have'nt taken any pics. of my green mon. Those are about 3ft. long and 2ft. wide. It's creeping everwhere. Jerry

I would suggest you contact AlohaHoya. Carol has plants and sells many different kinds. She also has all of the phyto-whatever certificates. I expect she would beat e-bay.

Aloha,

Princess Kilikina aka Christi

Met Carol at Jenny's when we were there in February. Wish I were there tonight.

(Kim) Philadelphi, PA(Zone 6a)

Thanks Jerry! I have had it for over 2 years...only one leaf is split gonna feed it and put it out for the summer. Maybe it will grow some :)

Dallas, TX

Keonikale,I can not keep AE-AE'S alive! I've had them to about 6-9ft. tall. Then they will rot in the middle and fall over then die. It's like one day they are find and dandy then next day DEAD!!!!! The only pictures i have of them where taken with my old film camera. Jerry

Lexington, SC(Zone 8a)

Thanks Christi. I'm hoping my wife and I will have a day to stop by and see her when we arrive on the Big Island at the start of May.

Lexington, SC(Zone 8a)

Thanks Jerry, I may avoid the bananas then. Perhaps if I lived in a more tropical climate. I think the monstera is my safer bet at this point.

(Kim) Philadelphi, PA(Zone 6a)

Thank you for the tip Christi!
Jerry did you mean your leaves are 3x5??? LOL my leaf is 3 inches ; }

Hi all, I'm fairly new here. I've seen quite a few of those variegated Monstera, the one on ebay is a really nice variety, but I don't think I'd pay more that $40.00 or $50.00 for one

Dallas, TX

kimarj, Mine are planted in the ground. I have a greenhouse that i put up over them in winter then take it down in summer and yes it's a lot of WORK!!!! Jerry

Once you have been to Maui, you must acquire royalty. At least, I feel like royalty.

LouC, Does Alohahoya have a website or a sale's list? Jerry

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

I'm sure she does. Just d-mail her. She is on the Big Island and her daughter is on Maui. They both have nurserys and sell. Tell her Princess Kilikina sent you.
That is my silly name that I adopted when I visited Braveheartsmom and Alohahoya. RJ will be here April 18th, 19, 20. Hope we get to visit the Dallas tropicals...as in Texasbigleaves, Truetropical, and Rita.

OK, so I've found another variegated Monstera. But now I'm getting confused. What exactly is the difference between "Monstera pertusa variegata" and the White Variegated Split-leaf "Monstera 'Albo Variegata'"? I read one site that said pertusa was used to describe juvenile plants, but other sources dispute that. I know there is also a yellow variety called Monstera deliciosa 'Marmorata' (though some site confused the situation more by calling the yellow splashed variety Pertusa). Arrgh

Can anyone clear up for me exactly what the difference is between all the variegated varieties? As I understand it, all these variegated monstera are Monstera borsigiana, or a smaller form of the all green and very common Monstera Deliciosa.

-John

Edit: I also just had a revelation on something. My wife and I used monstera in our wedding and I saved one of the cuttings to grow. But the monstera took off like a vine and never developed large leaves like my other monsteras, which have always been slower to climb. I am betting I now know why... it's probably a pure green Monstera deliciosa 'Borsigiana'. Now it makes sense.

And just for reference... this is the plant in question. So maybe the auction is labeled right... or wrong. I am not sure.

I have the smaller variety of white-variegated monstera. The leaves get up to 18" on my large plant, but average smaller than that. It is a beautiful, easy to grow variety which I'm always pruning back to keep under control. It even has a vine that just pushes out pure white leaves, which only last about a month before dying away.

'Thai constellation', as listed in the original post, is the only white-variegated variety that I know of for which claims are made that it is a full size deliciosa type with larger leaves. It is also described as having much less white on it. It is on my wish list, of course.

You might want to root some of those cuttings you take; looks like they go for no less than $50 on eBay from what I can take.

I did win the one above for a good price. I should have it tomorrow - I'm looking forward to growing this beauty.

The 'Thai Constellation' is beautiful, but WOW it goes for a lot. I've only found one site that sells it, starting at $90 for a fairly small plant.

Guess I should put some of my extras of these on Ebay!! I'd be rich Daddy Rich! LOL

Do you have the larger variety?

:)

Seguin, TX(Zone 8b)

Man...I got mine from Caldwell's, only paid $10 I think last year, looks like it went up some but still cheap compared to ebay: http://www.caldwellhort.com/html/philodendron.html . Unfortunately they are not mail order, but if you are ever in Texas I highly recommend a visit!
