Hello from SW Virginia

Southwest, VA(Zone 6a)

I've found myself semi-retired and now have the time to do some of the things I've always wanted as far as gardening goes, like reclaiming my yard. I'm mostly interested in edible plants, herbs, forms of fermentation, and seed sprouting (to eat). I want to learn more about solar for cooking, heating and water distilation, as well as for power needs. I like to build things, repurpose unused items, and explore nature.

I've been lurking on DG for a short while and finally decided to subscribe. I really like the wealth of information and the generous and helpful attitude of the DG community. I'm really enjoying this site!

Thanks for all the help so far folks!

Welcome Sundownr! Looks like you have some great interests, and I’m sure you will have quite a neat garden! I was going to try to incorporate a lot of edible landscaping into my small garden, but after the squirrels decimated my lemon guavas and stole a bunch of my tomato crop as well, I had to reconsider, LOL.

Welcome to Dave's Garden, Sundownr!

We have a family of mischievous squirrels, too. They test the apples by taking a bite, then throwing it across the little back yard if it's not ripe yet. The kids used to get blamed for it until DH saw the squirrels in action one day, lol. We put a chainlink fence around the garden to deter the rabbits and deer that were eating the veggies. But something is still munching in there, so the squirrels may be guilty again!

I wonder if there is something (fruit, veg, nut, grain, herb) that can be planted to distract the rowdy critters from eating our goodies?

Thank y'all for the welcoming!
