This is not an April fools joke

This is a 4 week old Serama, it is the size of a normal one week old standard breed. Seriously!

That is the same one with five week old Seramas from another breeder. I think the little one may be an "AA" size? It has a serious 'tude also.

And that is one of the five week old Seramas with a five week old standard Wyandotte for reference. That gives you some idea that is one small chicken.

Oh this is "frizzle" next to his larger cousin - sorry for so many photos but I thought it was cool how small they are. He only comes up to the larger ones belly, and he snuggles right in under them like a day-old with a broody.

don't apologize for the pictures. cool thread title too! my kids loved it! i need to get a current picture of my self blue OEG with his Buckeye hatchmates. and a week old JG. that would make an interesting picture!

yes, it seems the smaller ones have to hae an attitude in order to NOT end up at the bottom of the pecking order!

i want to ask why the difference in size between the seramas, is one more of a true breed type, or is the tiny guy just a little stunted? he sure looks healthy!

I hatched eggs from three different breeders. The last batch were smaller eggs, and I got two to hatch, frizzle and shnizzle (kids named them some sorta gangsta snoop dogg names). Frizzle, the tiny one was the smaller of the two eggs which hatched, the other chick is bigger than he is. I don't know if he is a runt or simply the spawn of smaller size parents and will continue to be small as an adult. I think the latter is the case. Fortunately, the 11 Serama eggs in my hatcher are from the same breeder, and three of those 11 are also tiny eggs like Frizzle's was.

I think I'd check for radiation or toxic waste dumping. The giant Serama looks like something from a si-fi movie. (Godzilla probably came from a normal egg too!) I love the little ones and have thought about getting a couple. We saw one at a show once that was about the size of a coke can. There is just something totaly cute about a chicken that tiny.

Me? I'm getting Jersy Giants...go figure.

Lincolnville, ME(Zone 5a)

Sorry for the cryptic post - that giant is a silver-pencilled Wyandotte, not a Serama! I was thinking about some Cochins, just to get the full spectrum of size out there. I heard they can get to like 12 pounds or something. I could use them as turkey decoys in the spring.

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

YEAH! Go Giants, Go Giants, Go Giants! YEAH!

Scott, you need Buckeyes! They are big enough fo ryou, and will be freidnly with the kids...

anyone notice what Dave did today? tell me please, i am not the only one with PINK all over my screen LOL

Williamsburg, MI(Zone 4b)

I saw that pink stuff! It all started when I saw what looked like
a pink hummer feeding at my snapdragons. I wasn't sure,
as I was looking through a screen out my window, that remains
a mystery-then- everything went pink!!! ha ha Dave.

Maine- That little guy is adorable! And, he looks like he has
'tude, too! I would say he's a keeper.

Columbia, TN(Zone 7b)

LOL that was a good one!

Luther, MI(Zone 4b)

Scott, did you name him "Frizzles" because he reminds you of the picture of yourself you posted some time ago?

Lincolnville, ME(Zone 5a)

Yeah - He and I both have bad attitudes too! Actually, he was kind of frizzly looking when he was born, and the name just evolved. I feel kind of frizzled right now come to think of it.

the orange chick in the 2nd and 3rd pic looks like my
EE.......is that what she is?

Lincolnville, ME(Zone 5a)

No she is a Serama, but there is an EE or Ameraucana in the 2nd pic, the fat one on the far right side that is nose to nose with the other one..

Are you sure scott? 100% sure? Look at those Green legs.

Lincolnville, ME(Zone 5a)

Not even 50% sure...LOL...Trick photography cuckoo. I know they look green, and they aren't pure yellow, but some of my seramas have black legs, some tinted a little greenish, some grey, some yellow (If it is ee blood, that would've been interesting to see those two breeding). I am completely unsure of what the standard for leg color is that breeders are working on, but I should probably try to find out - ya think?

Lincolnville, ME(Zone 5a)

This is one that hatched this am, from the same breeder. No that is not a giant chap-stick. This one is even smaller than friizzle was when he hatched. This egg was not much bigger than one of those tiny foil wrapped easter candy eggs.

There is something endearing about baby birds! Those two remind me of baby finches :-)

how precious! would be really cute if that was Chicken Poop Lip Balm...

can i post a picture of my OEG next to his Buckeye mates? well, you can say no later, LOL. i did this after seeing your picture. just floors me. i see it with my own eyes every day, but to see a picture of it is so much more real...

... and this is their final meeting, headed up by no other than Mr. Purple, Re: what moment to part ways and where to meet back up... report on any interesting snacks too...

PeeWee, i will put that on the list of names for the other OEGs we hatch out. i am saving our blue wheatens eggs [tested one that was cracked and it veined out, whopee!], and will be purchasing more self blue eggs as well.

Sorry to hijack your thread Scott [well, not sorry, someone had to do it!]

SC has some peewees that are seramas like Maineiacs, maybe when she feels better she will post them...

Molly, you are so accustomed to birds you could hold in your hand, perhaps you need OEG or Seramas?

here is his pose...

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

and his better side. see the blue feet and the nice feathering? I am thinking he is two weeks tomorrow or Sat, will have to look that up...

Lincolnville, ME(Zone 5a)

That is a really cute little bugger, I like his pose. Well only one more hatched, so I ended up with 3 total chicks out of 27 original eggs set.

Columbia, TN(Zone 7b)

Tf I want birds I can hold in a fork! ;-)

MollyD

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

sorry, Mr Purple is not for eating. perhaps we will name something Mr. Grape and you can have him LOL

thanks, Scott, he is our precious doll, well, next to my one year old. and the bird poops a lot less too LOL

Lincolnville, ME(Zone 5a)

The adult serama roos have a really quiet crow compared to some of the other bantams. Hey that reminds me of something I saw on youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aEID3_Hf7A4&feature=related

Lincolnville, ME(Zone 5a)

Well how quickly things can change - I noticed that frizzle and shnizzle (who are both 4 weeks, 3 days old) both have come down with the AE symptoms yesterday. They are both worse today and can not get to food or water on their own. They will drink like crazy if you get them near the water, same other symptoms as the other chicks. I also had to put down one of my BR bantams that was 3 weeks old, as he came down with it four days ago. The BR are the youngest chicks that were in with the sick MMH chicks - all the newer chicks have been in a "safe house" (at least I hope it is safe) so should not be infected.

Who out there knows how long I will need to wait before my two batches of chicks can be together? If I understand this correctly, a sick chick that survives should only be contagious for a certain time frame? At what age are chicks old enough that they will not develop symptoms (or die) if exposed?

I am going to cross post this on the other thread too.

Columbia, TN(Zone 7b)

Scott I am so sorry to read this. Maybe TF or silkie can tell you since they've both researched this disease a lot. I have zero experience with it or anything like it.

Hope since these are a bit older they make it through it.

MollyD

Lincolnville, ME(Zone 5a)

Frizzle didn't make it. Shnizzle appears like she won't live through the night.

Columbia, TN(Zone 7b)

Oh jeez. I am sorry to hear that. I thought this illness was done with when all the chicks seem to be improving :-(

MollyD

Lodi, United States

I am so sorry Scott. MMH has a lot to answer for....not that I think they had evil intent, but they need to make a greater effort to address the consequences of their inaction. I hope this is the end of it for you.

Lincolnville, ME(Zone 5a)

Yeah, these two should have been fine due to their age. It was a big surprise and hopefully the last surprise. I agree they have a lot to answer for. Now I won't feel like my newer chicks are safe for at least a few more weeks.

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

gee, any possiblilty, between your new job and all, that we could have new pictures?
