New Names...

North Augusta, ON

I found somebody up here that sells Hoya. The names are all from the 80's though so I can't find photos of them since they've probably been re-named.

Does anybody know what these are called now?

H. Incana
H. Minima
H. Darwinii
H. New Guinea White/Magnifica

Any help greatly appreciated!!

Is it Pikes? There was a post here some time ago trying to identify a couple of plants from there, including one named "incana".

The short answer is that the most common guess for the mislabeled "H. incana" was a form of H. australis- probably ssp, australis or ssp. tenuipies, would be my personal guess.
Someone opted that their H. minima looked like H. sp. DS-70, but there were no pictures. Hoya serpens also has been mislabeled in the past as H. minima.
If the plant they have now as H. New Guinea White/magnifica is the same one from this old DG post, it is probably either H. magnifica or H. calycina, similar species.
I also remember hearing that their darwinii was mislabeled, and might have been H. serpens, but I've not seen pictures.

NG White and magnifica should be different plants. do you have pictures? I have seen H. minima as H. lacunosa (or is that the other way around).

I don't have pics., but at $15 a pop I'd like to know what they are at least.
I have already picked:
Australis
Cinnamomfolia
Imperialis

oh, one called Longifolia Shepardii which I can't find either, it has to be one or the other don't it?

YUP...can't be both!! LOL

OK then, are the 4 "unknowns" I listed at the start of this thread nice enough to take a gamble on?

The New Guinea White/ magnifica certainly should be, all of the NG whites (calycina, magnifica, albiflora) are beautiful, whichever one it turns out to be.

Yup, go for the gamble. I still end up with totally common plants every now and then. I sometimes get plants that I pay a ton of money for, and come with only one root, and then die. Sometimes I have gotten plants loaded with mealies, mites, and flies, but hey, I think that it is all part of the game.

On the flip side, I have gambled with a "new" or "unknown" (to me anyway) seller, and have gotten MARVELOUS (oooo Max Hedroom flashback there) cuttings for the amount of money that I have paid.

It is all in the thrill of the hunt, and it really helps if you can relax, and come out of the worst buying experience with a smile. Some people can't, so the gamble maybe isn't the best idea for them, but as long as you can still have fun, in the spirit of the thing, my vote is to go for it. You need to decide what is best for you.

Good, there is also a New Guinea red listed....?

cross-posted, thank you too Sara...

I've seen Hoya nicholsoniae listed as New Guinea red before, in this case it is the leaves that are red, not the flowers, which are white.

Great, thanks for the help :))

I do believe I'm going to go for it...I'll be so happy to have some more new Hoya's I won't care if they are what they say they are or not!!

Be sure to let us know and post pictures!!!!!

I started my extended collection with Pikes and have all of these hoyas from him (Tom).

His H. imperialis is H. calycina
His H. minima is H. serpens
His H. incana is H. australis aff australis, as identified by Christine Burton
His H. darwinii is H. DS70
His H. New Guinea Red is probably H. Globulosa
His H. New Guinea White might be Magnifica
His H. shepherdii/longofolia is H. shepherdii
His H. cinamomifolia is an H. pottsii, not sure which one

The rest of his hoyas are idenitfied correctly.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Christine, it does help :))

The REST of his hoyas????? He certainly hasn't done well on those...how far away from reality can he get?????

I believe he has 22 varieties, so I guess that makes him approximately 30% incorrect. He has a rural, midwest garden centre, with alot of tropicals, and these 22 varieties of hoyas. I and others have offered him the correct names for his plants, but he doesn't want to change his lists for whatever reason. His plants are amazingly healthy and packaged extremely well for shipping. You take the good with the bad, and in this case I can provide correct names for his hoyas so it doesn't bother me. What's important for me with Pikes is the good service and healthy plants.

That, and they are in Canada!! I can live with a few wrong names for the convenience of ordering without having to deal with Phyto and Import certificates. Although, I have been working on the Import one ;))

He is the only *seller* of Hoya that I have found up here. When I was speaking to him he mentioned he was planning on retiring in a few years. I told him he couldn't retire until after I placed my order.

LeeAnn, there's also Flora Exotica in Montreal. Their hoyas are all correctly named, and he has a far greater selection of rarer hoyas. Here's a link to the hoyas page - http://www.floraexotica.ca/Flower-Hoya,%20Wax%20Plant.htm
